Need to use files on multiple drives as if they were in the same folder
I use a backup software called Macrium Reflect and they have an option for splitting your backup archive. I have a split archive that I have stored over multiple hard drives (because it is a very large file), but I cannot open the archive unless the archives are all in one folder. Is there some way to make a "virtual directory" or network drive so that I can use these files as if they are in the same folder, even though they are on different drives? Thanks very much.

Hi Connor, I'm not sure if this is exaclty what you are after but if you go to Computer Management and then Disk Management you can convert your drives to dynamic disks. Thereafter you can create a new spanned volume which you can mount as a drive letter or folder on your local machine. As this will require that you effectively reformat your new disk I am assuming that you are only at the setup stage and not attempting to restore a backup. Hope that helps. Yes. As long as the files are on the same file system (ie. the same computer) you can use linkd.exe, part of the Windows 2000 Resource Kit (and 2003 Resource Kit I believe) or Junction http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx to create symbolic links to the files. You need to make sure your backup software supports junction points though, or else it'll be just backing up the link and not the data at the endpoint. Ah... I see that Windows 7 and Windows 2008 have a command mklink.exe that can create true symlinks, even across file systems. You might want to look into using that. I think you nailed it there Bob. I didn't realise (until now) that Windows allowed true symlinks. Cathal O'Brien BSc, PgDip, PhD http://www.techsmart.ie
