Need to change rights to folders
Hello, My new laptop came with Windows 7 home premium installed. I am the only person using the laptop, and want to know how do I gain full rights to C:\users and all folders under it. I checked an my account that doesn't have a password is an admin account, but I can't give myself rights to these folders, including my own. I also do not have access to the recycle bin and documents and settings folders. How do I change all of this so that I can have full access to everything on the hard drive? Thank you

You are unable to change the NTFS permissions even if you are the administrator? Best regards.

Hello, I don't understand what you are saying. Are you telling me that I can't or are you asking me if I can change the permissions? Thank you.

You are able to modify permissions by proceeding like that? 1-Right click on the folder 2-Click on Properties 3-Click on Security 4-Click on Edit 5-Give permissions you want Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Malek, the steps you listed are the steps that I took before posting the original message. I get an "Access denied" message for the folders c:\users and c:\users\tracy. I don't understand how I don't have rights to these folders and don't have rights to change them, as my account has admin rights. It seems like something strange is going on. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. Thank you

Hi, Please run the following command (without quotes) in your Start Menu search box and copy the contents here from the UserGroups.txt file that is placed on your Desktop. "cmd /c whoami /groups > %USERPROFILE%\desktop\UserGroups.txt & notepad %USERPROFILE%\desktop\UserGroups.txt" If "BUILTIN\Administrators" is not in the list, then: 1. Open Control Panel -> User Accounts -> User Accounts 2. Manage User Accounts 3. Select your user from the list and click "Properties" 4. Ensure "Administrator" is selected. Click OK. 5. Verify that you have the rights you expect. Thanks, John

Hi, You may access some folders in C:\Users folder, such as your own user folder. However, you have no permission to access other users’ folders and some folder junctions. You also cannot access the system folders such as $RECYCLE.BIN and System Volume Information folders. For your reference, I would like to suggest you read the Microsoft article, Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders. In addition, I would like to explain that some folders with an arrow icon are junction points. The folder itself is shaded out with a shortcut overlay. If you have "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked, then you will see these junction points. It is intended that users have no access to these junction points. These junction points exist to provide backwards compatibility for older programs that are unaware of the new folder structure in Windows 7. For example, A program that is hardcoded to install files in the old Application Data will be silently redirected to AppData folder. For more information, please read the article, Application Compatibility: Junction Points and Backup Applications.
