Need to access shared resources on Windows 2000 from Windows 7
I can't get the Windows 7 computer to access the Windows 2000 computers. It can access the XP computer on the network just fine. The Windows 2000 computer can access the Windows 7 computer.

Make sure you enable NetBIOS or perhaps use WINS server. Can you ping windows 2000 by IP, if yes, you may want to access the Windows 2000 using IP address instead of hostname.Bob Lin, MS-MVP Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.howtonetworking.com

ON EDIT: I just looked at the settings on my newest laptop which has Home Premium, and it doesn't have the keys I listed below - BUT I am able to access my Window 2000 boxes without any problems and without having made any registry edits. The information I listed below was from a while back when I DID have a problem accessing SAMBA shares on my Linux (CentOS) server with the BETA Win7 and the Group Policy thing fixed the issues (I think there was also an issue on accessing my Win2000 DC, but honestly, it has been a while now... so YMMV !!!! So bottom line: The steps listed below may work or they might not... Sorry. First: Check your system time on both systems and be sure they match. Next: Check and adjust the following accordingly: For Windows 7 Professional / Ultimate Edition: - Under “Control Panel”, go to “System and Security” - Open “Administrative Tools” - Double Click “Local Security Policy” - Expand “Local Policies” - Click “Security Options” and Scroll to find “Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level” - Choose “Send LM & NTLM, use NTLMv2 session security is negotiated” for the drop down. For Windows 7 Home Edition: Run Regedit and go to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa add the key as follows (if it doesn't exist) : "lmcompatibilitylevel" and set it to 2 or use notepad, create a new file and paste the items below: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] "lmcompatibilitylevel"=dword:00000002 Save the file as ntlm.reg (or some such) then Double click the file you just created to write the settings to the registry (be sure it is saved with the .reg extension). Select “Yes” to the pop-ups to add to the registry. As always, be sure to backup (export) the registry/branch before making changes. .
