You only need -- and should only have -- one active antivirus application. You will not find many people here who have good things to say about any Norton product. On the other hand, many knowledgeable posters recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. Another recommended free antivirus solution is Avast!. And if you want a commercial product, NOD32 Antivirus 4 (not the "suite") is one of the best current products. If you have already installed Microsoft Security Essentials, I suggest that you uninstall NIS. You may need to get theNorton Uninstall tool from Symantec . In addition to MSE, download and scan once a week (after updating) with these two free antimalware apps:MalwareBytes AntimalwareSUPERAntiSpywareThe issue with your wireless connection is different. Home wireless networks should be secured using WPA2 and a reasonably long (10-20 character) password. You set this up using the configuration utility of your router. For more specific instructions, identify the make and model of your wireless router. If your computer is relatively new, it should be capable of WPA2 -- but be sure that you have installed XP Service Pack 3 (which you should have done long ago).

The real question is not whether you need it; it's really whether youshould ever have two anti-virus programs running at once. The answer is a very strong *NO*. They can adversely affect yourperformance and also cause problems since they can conflict with eachother. > Im not sure if it is adequate anti virus. Microsoft Security Essentials is *much* better than Norton. Norton isone of the *worst* ones available, and Microsoft Security Essentialsis one of the better ones. I strongly recommend dumping Norton. Here's my standard advice on the subject: For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willingto pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one of thefollowing three: AviraAvastMicrosoft Security Essentials You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download andinstall (both freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware *and*SuperAntiSpyware. > I very confused about how to protect my p.c. Norton is hands down the BEST antivirus. It has been proven on several sites that Norton outranks the various others. Yes, that means even Avast and Avira (the two best FREE programs). As for AVG, it doesn't work nearly as good. Anyone who recommends that stuff is trying to infect your system. It really doesn't protect anything. AVG Anti-spyware is good, but not their Antivirus.Norton gets a bad rap for severals reasons:1) In the past it has been a massive resource hog taking a better part of the system down. The newer versions (2008 and up) have improved greatly on this however. They still take more then others but for the best protection you can't compromise. (The current, 2011 is even better at resource usage.)2) The price point, $70 every year can feel a little steep. This is why Avast and Avira get ratings being they have quality free editions.3) Previous versions haven't been the best but they broke out in a stellar motion with 2008 to become the best.Proof? It has never slowed down my computer and i love the feature that it says if a file is safe when thousands of Norton users have OKed it. I love to download things. Luckily i have Norton and it catches viruses as their being downloaded and if you want you can easily scan the files again.Need help with your Windows 7? Just ask. -Travis Cochran
