Need permission from myself to delete files
I cannot delete some files in Windows Explorer on a local drive as I am told I need permission from myself. I have checked and I am the owner of the file and I am in the local admins group and have full control. How can I give myself permission to delete my own file? I tried to re-set myself as the owner but it says access denied. The computer is part of a domain and I have never had this problem before. I am running the RC build of Windows 7 SP1 though so not sure if I should be posting it there instead. Thanks Robin Robin Wilson

Actually I am now able to delete some of the files which had been giving this error although I cannot delete them all. Also with IE9 beta I cannot use the Technet Forums as I cannot click into the text box and there is no compatibility view either so had to install Firefox.Robin Wilson

Hi Robin, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. To make it clear, we need more information to analyze this issue; based on your description, this is not a common phenomenon; I also want to know about more information about these specific files. As my understanding, if you didn't create the file, you might not be able to delete it, even if it is stored in the Public folder. If that's the case, you need to ask the owner of the file to delete it. To learn more about permissions, see What are permissions? If you are an administrator or authorized user, you can take ownership of a file or folder, to take ownership of a file or folder, please kindly refer to the following link: Learn How to Take or Assign Ownership of Files and Folders Take Ownership of a File or Folder Regarding your Internet Explorer 9 BETA issue, we have the corresponding forum to support this product, I suggest you could post a new question in Internet Explorer forum: Internet Explorer 8 and 9 (Beta) (Public Forum) Forum Good luck. Hello Alex I did create the files and am logged in with a local administrator account (RWSSERVICES\robin.wilson). I am currently set as the owner of the files and should have full access to them. When I try to delete the files it tells me I need permission from RWSSERVICES\robin.wilson (myself) and I am unable to delete the files. If I try to make myself the owner of the files or change the permissions it says Access is Denied. So even though it shows I have full access to the files and I am the owner of them I cannot delete them. The files are all different sizes and reside on a separate 500GB partition on the main drive. A way around it is to log onto another computer on the domain (with the same user account) and access the other computer via a network share or the standard c$ administrative share and delete the files that way. This proves that my account does have permissions on the files but that Windows 7 is not allowing me to delete them locally for some strange reason. Should this be posted as a possible Windows 7 SP1 Beta bug? I am ok to use Firefox for the forum and assume it is more an issue with the forum as opposed to IE9.Robin Wilson

I think I have worked out what is causing this strange behaviour. It seems to be caused by Symantec Endpoint Protection which is the antivirus software installed on the computers. If I disable it I am able to to delete files from that directory. I was also unable to even move files into the directory before disabling the antivirus sometimes or other times the files would start to move/copy and then just hang and I had to restart the computer as canceling the file copy would crash explorer and it would then refuse to load again. This software caused issues on all the servers as well with similar problems and had to be removed (i.e. logins with roaming profiles taking hours). It is the latest version and is labeled as compatible with Windows 7 and 2008 R2 but it clearly isn't! RobinRobin Wilson

Ok REALLY??? This is outrageous I am completely familiar with Windows 7 and am getting very tired of this! Thousands of people have had the same problem this guy has mentioned and Microsofts only reply is to imply we are retarted! I have all permissions on my ONE & ONLY account on the computer let alone its an administrative account OBVIOUSLY! I have thousands of music files I'm not able to play cause it says I need permission yet I have all the permissions set to this account! The ONLY thing that has came close to giving me a glimpse of help is some guys comment on another forum about sharing the folder. Once "shared" to myself I was able to get the first song to play in each folder THAT'S IT! I have disabled all anti-virus programs and am still not able to play these mp3's. I have ownership of the file obviously since my account is the only account on my computer EVER and permissions are set to full control. So if you can come up with another "dumb" answer that you think I haven't tried be my guest. Otherwise this is a "bug" and considering how long it's been going on it's obscenely sad with your thousands of employees not one of them can fix it!

Hello Knip1112 I did manage to resolve my problem which was caused by Symantec Antivirus. I just have to live without protection on the servers as Symantec never did address the issue as dfar as I am aware. Yours must be a different issue to mine from the sound of it so it might be better to create a new post as mine is old now. You could right-click on the folder and check the security permissions are set correctly. If everything is correct it could possibly be a virus. Have you tried different players? RobinRobin Wilson

I had the same problem on a few files that I copied over from another installation as a backup. I added a script to the Explorer Right Click menu called "Take Ownership".... This worked for all files but one. That file would not give up.... asking for permission by myself to be deleted. Turned out that it was set to inherit security attributes from parent folder. So it showed up in the security tab like I had permission, but when checking the advanced section of security I didn't have direct access. I removed the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" option from Advanced Security Settings for the file and answered "Remove" to the question popping up when doing so. Once that was applied the file was mine to delete. Best of Luck Morten

Hello Your issue seems to be certificate related. Try to back-up the certificate contained in the file.

Alex, it does not allow me to take ownership, altho I have 'full control' admin rights. The file was copied from a cd to my desk top. The cd originated on my old hp vista machine. System shows 'unknown owner' and won't allow me to take ownership. So I can't delete it nor access it.
