Need for special permissions to change icons?
Don't mean to be a whinner but ..When using W7 as my full time system (at the moment) the additional internal security gets tedious I moved a bunch of apps off the desktop into a folder on the desktop and found a number of the icons where lost in the process. When I went to reattach the proper icon with the file I recieved the "need administer permission" window. I have to change permissions when attaching drives, motifying the start menu etc. Is there a way to do a blanket system change to give me full administrative rights .

I agree, I think that would be very nice.

Hi, In Windows systems that are later than Windows Vista, users do not have permissions on some system files and folders. This behavior is by design, it could help you to protect system components so any programs that are running under your user profile and have your permissions cannot modify or remove system components. We could change the ownerships and permissions, but some system kernel files could not be modified even you have full control rights. Additionally, if User Account Control is enabled, any user would be considered to be a standard user event they are members of administrator group. If any task that needs high privilege is needed, UAC would prompt you to pass the UAC authorizing. This function does not work if UAC is turned off. However, it is not recommended to disable UAC because the system would be less secure.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Why do I seem to constaintly need to be going in and changing permissions? When I installed W7 on my computer didn't I set myself up as the administrator? Just yesterday I found I could not delete desktop jpgs from the windows/web folder.

As we discussed above, modifying components in system folders needs higher privilege.Arthur Xie - MSFT

As we discussed above, modifying components in system folders needs higher privilege. Arthur Xie - MSFT I have to sayI'm very happy with that feature. I don't want any malware running in my system doing changes, not needing any permission or higher instance to run them.On behalf of the security, I don't mind a few clicks more.Regards.W7 Beta running on an AMD Semprom 3200+ (1800Mhz) with 2 Gbs of RAM and a built-in Nvidia 6100 VGA, and mate, it runs like a charm! And now on my VAIO FE31M Laptop.

Reckon/Arther,"On behalf of the security, I don't mind a few clicks more"To each their own. I happen to thinkusing my own brain instead of relying on the computer for security is still my best defence against viruses. If you are stupid enoughto givepermission to install 'free' software trogans off the web or out of email, all the best selling consumer antivirus software and firewalls are little help to you.My situation would be different if I used the PC for business or had other people or kids using the PC.If you read my origional post, you would see my problem originated when I tried to simply clean up my desktop.Do you think relocating shortcuts ON SOFTWARE ALREADY INSTALLED is a security risk?

Hello Shwarob,I do understand your concerns, but I don't like the idea of anything running in the computer and changing so trivia things as icons desktops. Because that implies it has access to essential system components within the SO.Sorry for the misundertood and regards.W7 Beta running on an AMD Semprom 3200+ (1800Mhz) with 2 Gbs of RAM and a built-in Nvidia 6100 VGA, and mate, it runs like a charm! "anything running in the computer and changing so trivia things as icons desktops." Anyone ? me (the administrator) ( the one with the keyboard) was trying to reattach default icons after they were lost when moving shortcuts from desktop to a folder on desktop. I needed to add special administrative permissions to do so. I suspect there was some kind of security block on that caused the icons to be lost in the first place. The point is, I am trying to familiarize myself with this new operating system. It isn't so much that I am bothered with these little glitches today, I suspect I will be using this software or something close to it for the next five years. It would be nice to learn if there is a way to change the default settings to give myself full administrative rights so I don't need to always remember to change permissions when attempting to transfer data to external drives or attempting to edit the start menu(as example)

Shwarob, when I said "anything" I meant "anything"... a program, malware, etc... moving icons from one location to another. I'm not native english butI do perfectly know the difference between anything and anyone. As someone said before, to change system content, you do need higher privileges. That's all.Enjoy W7.
