Need Help with strange boot problem...

So exactly one week ago my pc had a blue screen 'Sorry your pc ran into a problem and needs to reset'. Upon restart I get a black screen after bios that says BootManager then has an actual smiley face beside it and that is all. After alt+ctrl+delete and trying to reboot again with same results (my OS drive was not listed) I powered down. When I powered back on my pc loaded up as if nothing had happened. I tried to run Windows Defender full scan to see if something was there and it did the same exact process again. Once I was off/on again I came straight to Microsoft chat (I have a support package). On a second pc he told me this was a fatal error and I needed to upgrade my Windows key to be able to do a full reset, and told me that this could be caused by over 50 different things. So I paid the money and got the new key and did a full clear on my hard drive and reinstalled windows.

Here I am exactly 7 days later and the same exact thing happens again. Is my drive faulty? Do I have a virus? Can anyone please shed light on this? I don't care to have to do a fresh install if its a virus, but I don't want to have to continue to do this. The only thing I have done is get my normal programs like Steam and Chrome. The only thing I can think of giving me a virus or something is the 4-5 mods I am currently using from the Nexus on The Witcher 3 but they are all being used by thousands of people so I would think that someone else would be having this problem as well if that was the cause. Any information at all on this would be so very helpful. I will go back to Microsoft Chat later and see what can be done, but I also want a second opinion because something obviously is not right. For all I know it could be the drive failing. I've tried some searches around Google but cannot find anything with this specific problem.

Windows 8.1 with all updates.  Thanks, Josh.

We do need the actual log files (called a DMP files) as they contain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here If you have any questions about the procedure please ask

Hi,

I would like you to check if there is any updates installed before this issue especially the driver update, if so, uninstall the update to see what's going on.

In addition, I suggest you run Memory diagnostic tool and disk checker to see if there is any error or if they can fix your issue.

Memory diagnostic tool:

Type memory on the Start screen, choose Settings and then click or tap the search result that says "Diagnose your computer's memory problems".

Disk checker:

Please open Safe mode with command prompt, and run following commands:

CHKDSK /R /F

Post back if there is any update.

June 9th, 2015 4:39am

First off I have not had another crash since then. The first time it happened 2 weeks ago, I had multiple crashes in the same day.

@Kate Li- I update windows every time something is available to update. Which driver update are you asking me to remove?

I am going to go thru the memory checks now and will report back any findings. I need my minidump file for the post a couple up, but as I said I have yet to have another crash...

@ Kate Li- I ran the memory diagnostic tool and it found no problems.

I ran cmd prompt in safe mode with CHKDSK/R/F and it said:

The type of the file system is NTFS.

Cannot lock current drive.

Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

June 9th, 2015 4:20pm

Hi,

Type CHDSK C:/F in CMD as administrator, you will be prompted to choose Yes or no to determine whether you want to run Check disk when restarting, please choose Yes.

Then, let me know the results.

If you upload the DMP file as per ZigZag's request we can analyze it and tell you exactly what was causing the crash. From there we can determine what needs to be done to fix the issue.
June 17th, 2015 11:18am

If you read my post, it wasn't enabled unfortunately. I did go in and enable it but it has not happened again since then for some reason. Not sure what is going on. As soon as it does tho I will have the dump file and will post it.

And as for the CHDSK C:/F in CMD... I tried to do the one that was posted above and got above results from it. I just tried using the command you gave me, in admin, and got this:

'CHDSK' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

 I entered exactly >CHDSK C:/F.

Ops, my mistake, the right command should be CHKDSK C:/F

BTW, can we get the dump file zig required at this time? If so, upload and shared with us for our research.

I missed it at the bottom of your PC settings post, my apologies. If you haven't had a crash since then that's a good thing. If one occurs, post it here and we will analyze it.

Yeah I'm still waiting to see if it happens again. So far so good and I have not made any changes or anything since that crash so I'm not sure what that is all about. I just hope I enabled the minidump file correctly...it should be fine though, I followed the instructions word for word.

@Kate Li. I will run the new command and post back. And again, My pc settings did not have the dump file enabled. I have now enabled it but am waiting for the problem to happen again to hopefully have the dump file.

Typically when you run CHKDSK with the /f (fix parameter) it doesn't give you enough time to read what it found before it reboots itself. I am unaware if there any logs kept for those scans, if someone knows I'd like to know how to find them.

If you are curious to know if your drive has errors you can simply run CHKDSK from an elevated command prompt, just don't add the /f and it'll scan without having to reboot.

June 18th, 2015 8:28am

So I have not had the BSOD that leads to the boot problem again but now am having a different BSOD. I have now had 3 BSODs that said: Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error with one of them having (Spaceport.sys) at the end.

I followed all the instructions for the minidump to the letter. When the BSOD happens it says Windows is collecting error data and then I can restart with the Kernel error message at the bottom, but it does not do anything. It just sits there with a (0%) collected and never increases or does anything. After waiting about 20 or so minutes I'm forced to do a hard reset.

I have the settings for the mindump file all to what the instructions say to do, even made the minidump sub-file in the Windows file under C:. So I'm sure without this file not much can be done, but I don't know why it won't collect any data. Any helpful info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Two issues.  First and most likely, you video driver.  Completely remove the current video driver and install the newest driver available.

Second you have a HD issue.  Run CHKDSK and go to the HD maker, download and run their disk checking utility

Yeah the stupid driver issue has been going on since the Witcher 3 drivers from Nvidia came out. But I have already done a clean install of the newest drivers (for the new Batman game) and it is still happening. But I will do another clean install. I have looked around on this issue and it seems a lot of people get it periodically (going back years) but I found nothing about fixing it.

I will run the CHKDSK again but so far every time I do it either says no problems were found or says something about NTSF...not sure what that is about. Will run it again and see what I can dig up on Western Digital's site and post back.

June 27th, 2015 9:17pm

You should also disable the nVidia streaming service as that is often at the seat of the issue.

CHKDSK only examines the file system not the actual hd

Running CHKDSK still says no problems were found. On WD's site the only thing I could find that even looked like a disk check was their Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. Running the smart check found no errors and said everything was within optimal parameters. Everything it listed was green check marked. I can run the full scan it provides if you think it is needed.

I am going to do another clean install of the newest Nvidia driver right now.

*I did the clean install of the newest driver. I did it thru the site instead of GeForce Experience like I normally do as well.

I stopped the Nvidia streamer service. Thanks for that. I had no clue that was even running. I don't even own a Shield so that seems really silly to have that running for no reason. I also disabled it from restarting. Hopefully that will help with the Kernel Power/Nvidia Driver error that blacks out my screens/crashes my games.

I just don't want to buy a new HD when this one is working 99% percent of the time and I cannot find any issues with it besides a few random BSODs that sometimes happen weeks apart. Obviously something is wrong with 2 different BSODs, but I would at least like to wait and try for a dump file before giving up.

Personally that's what I'd do, when/if you get a BSOD upload the dump here and I'll be happy to take a look at it.

So the last 2 BSODs I had, the blue screen said it was collecting info on the crash but it just sat at (0%) and never would do anything. Any thoughts on why this would be, and why it wont create the dump file? I have it enabled, I created the file in the correct location, I followed every instruction on getting the dump file to work, to the letter, but it just won't collect one which is really keeping me from getting anything going.

You should also disable the nVidia streaming service as that is often at the seat of the issue.

System crashes are most commonly caused by a driver, and sometimes by applications or services that run in the background.

If youre unable to isolate the cause of the crash through dump file analysis, you can also proceed by updating your drivers with the latest driver packages available through the system or device manufacturer. Since it seems your NVIDIA graphics card drivers are up to date, you might also want to update drivers for chipset, network adapters, storage adapters, etc. and update the firmware on your motherboard (BIOS update), SSD (if you have one), etc.

If everything that can be updated for drivers and firmware is fully up-to-date, you could also use MSConfig to disable services and applications from starting up in the background. If you can confirm that the system does not crash will all non-Microsoft services disabled and all startup applications enabled, you can start the process of enabling services and devices to see if your system crashes return.

Another consideration could be memory errors, especially where dump files arent being created. You should download a memory testing utility and test your memory to ensure you are without errors. One option is the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Yet another consideration could be that core system files could have become corrupt. You can verify and repair the integrity of your Windows environment with the following command (run from an administrative command prompt):

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

So I just had another Kernel-Power BSOD... Once again I get a blue screen saying that there has been an error etc, and it says Windows is collecting info on the crash then will restart, but it just sat at 0% and never did anything. I let it sit for over an hour hoping it would collect the info, or put something in the minidump file, but nothing happened so I had to hard restart. Any thoughts on why it will not collect the info/minidump?

Another Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error today. And again it says Windows is collecting crash information but just sits at 0% and never resets or does anything. I know I cannot do anything without the minidump but it just refuses to collect one...

Well now that Windows 10 is here hopefully this will all just go away...if not then idk...
