Name and Company Info Missing when Installing New Programs
The Name and Company info that used to be automatically populated in WinXP when you start to install a new program seems to be missing and I was wondering if there's a way to set that somewhere (Control Panel, registry)? It usually populates my user name only in both slots but I've seen it also add Microsoft to both places. Thanks

Hi,Does this issue occur with all installed programs or a specific application? If it is related to a specific application, what is the name? Where do you download it? I recommend you to contact software vendor to make sure that it iscompatible with Windows 7. Based on my experience, after installing a program, the related name and company information will be stored in the following location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\[Program Name]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[Program Name]BTW, since the issue seems be more of programs /drivers. The HCL may be a better place to get help.Best Regards.Dale Qiao

Hi Dale,It's happening with all programs, even Microsoft, yet there's only been programs from one company (not Microsoft)that entered Microsoft as the name and company name. I'll check the HCL section. Thanks,Mike

Isn't there some central location in the registry where the name and company name info is stored that program installers access during install? It seemed that way in WinXP. I vaguelyremember after re-installing WinXP over the yearsthat when I was installing other programs, that info was automatically filled for me to change if necessary.

Hi,Based on my test, the reistry location for installed program information is:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UninstallThere are many installed properties listing under each SID.Hope this helps.Thanks.

I found the registry keys that fill in the name and company name (organization) during install, at least with Microsoft installers and possibly others.It's:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOwnerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOrganizationIn WindowsXP these values were set, maybe during install, but in Windows 7 I had to set them manually. Once I did, the Microsoft installer loaded these values into the proper fields of the installer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOwner HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\RegisteredOrganization Thanks, that solved my problem: Windows 7 home does not populate "RegisteredOrganization" defaulting to "microsoft", and "RegisteredOwner" should be my name, not the name of the first created admin account. I get the impression that I'll need "regedit" rather often with windows 7 home, but that won't convince me to upgrade "home premium" to something better for now... ;-)
