Name Resolution
My W7 laptop has been connected to my home network for a month, and worked fine. A couple days ago I lost the ability to connect to the other PC's and the NAS on my network. The other devices could connect fine. Yesterday I realized I can access the other devices by IP address but not by name. IP addresses and workgroup are right. Here is my ipconfig. HELP!!!!! What DNS server is handling the requests for name resolution? Do you have network discovery turned on? Do you have file and print sharing turned on? Network discovery requires that the DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services are started, that network discovery is allowed to communicate through Windows Firewall --> from windows helpMake sure those services have started. I didn't set up an DNS server. Haven't on any home network I've ever had for the last 10 years. As noted, everything worked fine till a few days ago. Everything you noted that needs turned on is and has been turned on. The Windows firewall is turned off. I have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed, and has been since the computer was new. I tried turning off the firewall and that didn't help. I can access other local computers by IP address but not by name. Thanks Mark

What is the model of the laptop? This issue can be caused by incorrect antivirus/firewall settings, corrupt device driver or incorrect DNS or WINS related settings. I suggest you temporary disable the firewall and antivirus, then check the result. If the issue persists, please roll back the network adapter driver. How to Roll Back a Device Driver If the driver cannot be rolled back, please download the latest Windows 7 compatible driver from the computer or manufacturer’s website. Then reinstall the device driver. If the issue is not resolved, I suggest you check NetBIOS over TCP/IP settings. 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.2. Under Network and Internet, click View network status and tasks. 3. Click Change adapter settings.4. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.5. In the This connection uses the following items list, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), click Advanced, and then click the WINS tab.6. Click “Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server”, and then click OK three times. If the issue still occurs, I suggest you temporary disable the firewall and antivirus, then check the result.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I have a similar issue - it comes up randomly at boot whenever the machine in question sees more than one network as "available". Like two workgroups (the homegroup and another named workgroup is a classic condition for problems). It will map some services to one network, other services correctly. This all happens when only one real network is available. Seems Win7's propensity to share everything publically sees the local network DCHP server as independent until it gets an IP address; so sets the istapi tunneling adapter to it. This blocks the normal startup from finding the normally routed DNS services through it. (my guesswork here, have not confirmed it).
