NTLMv2 Secure Authentication method
I have a mixture of Windows XP, Windows Vista Business and now one W7 PCs;now can't connect toour Buffalo NAS server which uses Samba server withmy new Window 7 Home Premium 64bit PC with signon errors.I think it's because Microsoft's default new security policy is to use only NTLMv2 authentication, which Samba 2.x doesn't support. With Vista Business, the secpol.msc program allows you to change thesecurity policy setting, but this program doesn't seem to exit in VistaHome or my new Windows 7.How can I change from NTLMv2 only to Send LM & NTLMfrom my new Windows 7 Home Premium 64bitThanks for any assistance.

Many thanks Nicholas for your quick reply, unfortunately I could not locate the "....\LMComtatibilityLevel" key where you indicated. In my OP, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, I found it the the following posiion "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Schema\wcm://Microsoft-Windows-Security-NTLM?version=...........\metadate\elements\LmCompatilityLevel" the data is "(value not set)".Is this the correct position and Key entry for my Windows OP and if so to what should I set the data?Hoping you can help further,Nevio

I, too have Windows 7 home Premium and am unable to find "LMCompatibilityLevel" under the registry...I can get as far as the Lsa. Where and how would I create it as DWord if that is the solution?

Dear Mr. Li: I am having trouble installing a HP driver (LaserJet CM1017) for Windows 7, and HP has been less than helpful. Finally, they said to use the drivers for Vista and to set the Compatibility Mode for those modules to Windows Vista, SP2. I did that, and it worked for W7, x86. However, it fails for W7 x64. The printer is accessed via the Lan. The installation searches the network and locates the printer. I then select it. After I click Confirm Printer Settings it fails. It says it cannot find the printer, or a firewall is blocking it. The firewall has been stopped and when I put the IP address of the printer in IE, the printer maintenance page is displayed proving I have access to the printer. I am writing to you as another uses suggested setting LmCompatibilityLevel to "2." That did not work. Do you have any other suggestions. Thank you. Sincerely, Jeff V. Pulver

Hello, I am having a similar issue and I created this “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel” to “1”. but it did not resolve the issue. My question is, should it just be in the Lsa folder and not one of the many subfolders under this, and does it matter whether it is in capitals or not (In some posts it is LM, in others lm and other Lm) Reply is appreciated.

I had to use the capitalization LmCompatibilityLevel to make it work. Hope this helps.

Hello Nicholas, My OS is Win7 Pro and I'm having the same issues with a NAS box not showing up as well. As you can see, I have implemented your suggestion as follows: Regretfully this did not resolve the connection between the NAS/Samba and Win7 Pro. The Workgroup Name is the same for all PCs and NAS on the LAN. When I first introduced the NAS to the LAN it was recognized by the Win7 machines but after a auto-update from MS somewhere along the way the NAS box disappeared. There are two many people reporting this via the WWW for it to be a isolated event. There has to be a central cause for this occurance IMHO. Best Regard

Any luck on this one? I too am having the same issue, but with accessing one particular XP professional machine. I set LmCompatibilityLevel to 2, and it worked one day. Then i set it to 0, and again it worked for one day. Now it doesnt work at all. I've tried everything I can think off, nothing works. And the wierd thing is that I am having trouble accessing only one of the XP machines. There are 5 other XP machines, plus one 98SE that i can easily access from that same windows 7HP. Just not this one, where the printer is and important data that needs to be shared. Also, it all happened out of the blue. It originaly worked without any problems for around 5 months.
