You must have an XP installation disc in order to fix the "NTLDR is missing" error. Have "the guy" slipstream XP Service Pack 3 if he thinks his disc is "too old". Otherwise you will need to borrow a matching XP installation disc from a friend or take the computer to a reputable local professional. This will not be "the guy" or a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Set the BIOS to boot from the CD first. When you first start the computer you will see a message that says something like "Press F2 to enter Setup". Many computers also will say something like "Press F12 for a temporary boot menu". If you have that option, take it. Insert your XP installation CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank or, if you assigned a password to the built-in Administrator, enter that. Assuming your optical drive is D:\, type: COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\ [enter] COPY D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\ [enter] [a file that may also be missing] then rebuild the boot configuration boot.ini file by typing: Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini [enter] [if not found skip the next line] DEL C:\boot.ini [enter] BootCfg /Rebuild [enter] MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

This solution sounds a bit too easy! When I was asked for the Admin password after selecting the Repair option, I pressed ENTER to go on. The response said it was the wrong password and aborted after the third try. PASSWORD and ENTER aren't it. I never entered any Admin or Guest password when I setup the system! How do I bypass this mess while trying to run a repair op off the XP Pro SP3 install CD?

The problem is getting the Windows XP recovery console to work. It is asking me for a password when there is none!

XP SP3 FF 3.6.3, tHE GUY THAT HELPED ME BUILD THIS SYSTEM said his disk was too old and he kept it.That's nonsense. He is required to provide you the neccessary XP installation disk. Not only that, the disk is not too old. Although it may not be at SP3 level, it will still work!
