NIC appears to have MAC address of 00-00-00-00-00-00
Hi, A while ago I noticed that the IP address of my Windows 7 ultimate x64 pc was not getting the IP address I had assigned to its MAC address in the DHCP service of my home router. A quick inspection of my PC's network settings showed that the connected NIC had the MAC address of 00-00-00-00-00-00. At the time I put it down to VMWare Workstation (7) altering the MAC at some point in the windows networking stack for the purpose of virtual networking. Although slightly annoyed I carried on as the router was still handing out an IP address via DHCP - just not the one I wanted. Recently though I had to do a reinstall with just the base OS. Before I installed any software on it I noticed my MAC address was still 00-00-00-00-00-00. The following locations all confirmed that the MAC/Physical address of the NIC was being reported as 00-00-00-00-00-00: IPconfig Device properties in device manager > details > address WMI Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration object MS Network Monitor My understanding was that NICs had the MAC address hardcoded into the device themselves and you had to go through great lengths to overwrite it. Needless to say I haven't willingly done anything to change the NIC's MAC Address. The NIC is a "Generic Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller " that is built in to my FoxConn P9657AA-8EKRS2H motherboard. The only configuration options for it in the BIOS are enable/disable and WOL. Can anyone shed some light into what's going on with my MAC and how I can get it back? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hi, Please try the following: 1. Go to Device Manager, right click on the NIC and select Properties; switch to Advanced tab check if you have modified the entry “Network Address”. 2. Completely uninstall the NIC in Device Manager and remove its driver from Programs and Features. 3. Restart the computer and install the latest version of its driver for Windows 7 to see how it works. If the issue persists, since it is also related to the specific device, please contact Marvell and Foxconn for further investigation Marvell Support Foxconn Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. Its unacceptable. The problem goes back even futher than Vista - It has been a problem since Windows XP initial release in 2001. Yes ten years Microsoft! Yes its now in Windows 7. eg: The Wireless LAN adaptor finds an access point but can not connect because (as shown when you run IPCONFIG) "Media Disconnected" the only work arounds I have found are: WINDOWS XP: netsh int ip reset reset.log netsh winsock reset catalog - also in the registry HKLM/Serv/Ccset/TCPIP/Parm a new parameter DisableDHCPMediaSense with a Dword value of 1 WINDOWS Vista and Windows 7 (run as administrator) netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ipv4 reset resret.log netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log The registry patch for XP works also
