Dell Dimension E520 Windows XP SP3The problem is:The file structure on volume K: (a Data Partition) is corrupt and unusable, ID event 55.History:On 3rd of Oct event log reported an ID event 57 (the system failed to flush data to the transaction log corruption may occur). The computer was used on the 4th and 8th of Oct no problem occurred. Not used till the 17th Oct, the system carried out an auto chkdsk on boot up and has been doing so since but not showing any disk errors. Troubleshooting attempts that failed to correct problem:Carried out a chkdsk /r and fTried to use chkdsk from the recovery consul but the chkdsk stopped after a short period of time showing an error (can’t remember the exact msg but inferred that it was unable to work on the disk)Carried out the dell diagnostic on the hard drive past all tests.

Hi Blacksmith60, Before we troubleshoot the issue I need more information about the issue. · Are you able to boot to the desktop now?· Are you still getting the auto chkdsk on bootup?· Do you still get the error in Event viewer? It would be of help if you can recreate the error message by running the chkdsk from recovery console and provide the exact error message for better troubleshooting steps. You may also try to run disk error checking in Windows and check for the error message. Access the link below and follow the steps in the article to run disk error checking in Windows. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 Hope this helps. Post back with the required information. Is this volume K an internal drive, a partition on a larger drive or an external drive?Has there been any power interruptions to your system while XP was running prior to these events? Are you having some issue or are you just looking in the Event Logs for curiosity or maintenance? If chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console will not complete, we are kinda going to have to know what the message says to help figure out what is wrong.Post a couple of these recent events you see from the Event Log. Here is how to do that:If you double click an event, it will open a Properties window with more information. On the right are black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to your Windows clipboard. When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of your issue, click the third button under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, Paste or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis. Remove any personal information from your informationafter pasting if you are compelled to do so.If you paste an Event, it will look something like this boring system startup event:Event Type: InformationEvent Source: Service Control ManagerEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 7035Date: 7/14/2010Time: 5:54:18 PMUser: JoseComputer: ComputerDescription:The Remote Access Connection Manager service was successfully sent a start control. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear the log (backing up the log is offered), then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the time of your issue and troubleshoot the events that are happening when you have your issue. If chkdsk is running when you reboot your system, you need to look at the chkdsk results log and see what it says and interpret the results. Those results are also in the Event Log, so you can post that chkdsk results too if you need another set of eyeballs on it:When chkdsk runs automatically on a reboot either because XP thinks it needs to (perhaps your NTFS volume has been marked as dirty) or you chose to do it youself, the results are shown in the Event Viewer Application log. You need to look there for the chkdsk log and any problems after chkdsk has run. To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box enter:%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.mscClick OK to launch the Event Viewer.Look in the Application log for an event sourced by Winlogon, something like:Event Type: InformationEvent Source: WinlogonEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 1001Description:Checking file system on C:The type of the file system is NTFS.A disk check has been scheduled.Windows will now check the disk. 39070048 KB total disk space. 25151976 KB in 78653 files. 48256 KB in 10264 indexes. 0 KB in bad sectors. 237080 KB in use by the system. 65536 KB occupied by the log file. 13632736 KB available on disk.Windows has finished checking your disk.Don't guess what the problem might be - figure it out and fix it. Hmmm.... then I am not sure if chkdsk /r from Recovery Conole will not straighten it out (that is the only way Iknow of to clea the dirty bit). You coudl check with Dell and in their forums for some advice. You could determine the manufacturer of your afflicted hard drive and run their specific diagnostics. You could see if you can copy your important data off drive K and reformat it, but if the hardware is failing, that may not last long.I don't have any ideas at the moment that make me feel real confident (sorry!).Someone or you may hav thought of running chkdsk /f from Recovery Console and not tell you about the warnings, so before that comes up, read what Microsoft has to say about chkdsk /f:If you use chkdsk /f on a very large disk (for example, 70 gigabytes) or a disk with a very large number of files (for example, millions of files), chkdsk might take a long time (for example, over several days) to complete. The computer is not available during this time because chkdsk does not relinquish control until it is finished. WARNING: When Chkdsk detects problems with the file system and attempts to repair the damage, data loss can occur. Microsoft does not recommend running Chkdsk with the /f command-line switch unless you have a full backup of your hard disk. Don't guess what the problem might be - figure it out and fix it.
