NEWDEV.EXE pipe - install request every logon after Aug 2011 Updates
After recent security upates Aug 10-11, I have been getting a request after user startup, to supply admin password to install a driver ... Hitting the button to get more details, I find: Publishers certividate "MS Windows Verifcation PCA" but outdated (10/12/2008 to 1/22/2010), root authority stated to be Microsoft Corporation program is newdev.exe parameters include: "00000001" \\.\pipe\PNP_Device_Install_Pipe_ followed by a number which changes, and a long string beginning {020958 but further characters are truncated in the display "usb\vid_045e&pid_00f9&mi_00\6&653dl then truncated ... Is this a new bug resulting from the security updates? JimJimC

Hi Jim, Since the issue occurred after installing security updates, I suggest performing system restore to check the result. If the issue is resolved, check whether the problematic update is related to driver. If so, go to manufacture's site to download the driver. However, if it doesn't fix the issue, please try the following method. 1. Click the Start Button, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and then press ENTER. 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} 3. Right click the {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save. Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. 4. Highlight this key ({36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}), on the right pane, delete the upperfilter and lowerfilter entries if these strings are present. 5. Restart your computer and go to Device Manager, check if there is any incorrect USB device. If so, delete them. 6. Perform clean boot to check the result. Niki, Your recommendations were followed in part: I did NOT do a System Restore. But I did follow your Registry edit recommendations. Specifically, I backed up the recommended key, then delected the Upper Filter entry. There were no missing USB devices after restart. I did the clean boot also. The recurring request to install the "pipe" at every logon no longer occurs. Thanks! JimJimC
