Hello,What exactly has changed since last month? If something has been changed Windows Vista has a feature called System Restore that automatically backs up registry and system files whenever you install new software or drivers. Please check out the follwoing link for more details.http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/517d3b8e-3379-46c1-b479-05b30d6fb3f01033.mspx#EDG

Hi, From your post, I know that it hangs when you turn on Network Discovery, and you cannot access your wireless router to surf the Internet. Firstly, could you please tell me which changes have been made on Windows Vista recently before the issue occurred? Please also try to use the System Restore to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur. (Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current status.) Based on my research, Id like suggest you try the following to check the Internet connection issues: 1. Update device driver for the wireless NIC. And please also give me the detail information about the wireless NIC, such as its brand and model. 2. We can check the issue by manually assigning IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and the DNS settings according to your routers settings. Please let me know if this helps. 3. Configure the wireless NIC settings to obtain the IP address and DNS automatically to see if it works. 4. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue. Clean boot =================1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Please check if you can access the Internet with per-suggestions and let me know the results. If this still exists, it can be caused by the factor that the Vista cannot obtain an proper IP address and please refer to the following KB: Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 After checking, if the issue persists, please help collect more information: 1. Lets run CMD and then ipconfig /all to export all the network settings and post the information to this thread. 2. Please check the event log. Is there any related error message? 3. Based on my experience, the issue may be related to the device drivers of the wireless chipsets and the firmware of the wireless router. Therefore, I would like to suggest that you also check your wireless router manufacturers website and check if there is any upgrade version of firmware. 4. Please check if you have any other NICs (including virtual, wired or wireless). If so, please try to disable them in the "Control Panel-Network connections" or remove them from the device manager to have a check (Please make sure that you have driver before removing). Hope this helps. Nicholas Li - MSFT Nicholas Li - MSFT
