My laptop thinks it is a desktop
Was working at one point, but at some point in the last 6 months my laptop stopped showing me the battery indicator in the icon tray, and stopped giving me the option what happens when I close the lid. Help?? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on an HP HDX 16. Thanks in advance for the help.

In your start menu search box type Notification Area Icons and launch it Check that your power setting has always show icons and notifications To change what closing the lid does in the start menu search type power options and select it then select choose what closing the lid doesRegards, ~P MCSE, MCITP, MCTS, MCP, CCNA

The whole point is that I don;t have these options AT ALL, not that they aren't set right. If I look at he screen you sent a shot of I have no l ine item at all for power. If I look at properties of system icons which shows things like clock and volume as on/off, the one for power is greyed out. And if i go into power options on the far left where i have "choose when to turn off the display" and "change when computer sleeps" there is NOT an option to let me choose what to do when i close the lid. Like I said, its as if my computer thinks its a desktop, not a laptop..

Hmmm. Indeed it does. Are you on a domain that may have some GPO set? There is a setting in your local group policy that can hide the battery icon in the tray but to be honest it shouldnt have an affect your other issues . Run GPedit.msc to start Local Group Policy Editor. Expand the tree to go to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar. Their should be a Remove the battery meter option. If this is enabled it doesnt show up in the notification area. You might want to check device manager and see if you have some problems devices. Specifically those relating to batteries. Select show hidden devices. Is your battery working OK. Do you have an HP utility installed that also controls power settings?Regards, ~P MCSE, MCITP, MCTS, MCP, CCNA

Hi, · The battery icon won't appear if you're using a desktop computer without an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), or you're using a UPS that's connected to your computer by a serial cable. · If you're using a UPS with a universal serial bus (USB) connection and you don't see a battery icon in the notification area, make sure that the USB cable from the UPS is connected to a USB port on your computer. If the USB cable is connected to the USB port and you still don't see the battery icon, check the information that came with the UPS, or update the UPS device driver. For more information, see Update drivers: recommended links. Please see: Why don't I see a battery icon in the notification area? Its not a desktop. Its a laptop. Thats why its so frustrating that I don't have hte batter indicator, and I can't tell it to put my laptop into hibernation when I close the lid. Still looking for a solution... BTW- Not part of a domain and never have been. Its a home computer that is workgroup.. Thanks, Mark

Ok, there is only 59 versions of the HDX 16 and what version of Windows did you say you were running? Ultimate 64 or 32-bit? Is the BIOS the most recent? Did you install the quick launch button software? Anyway, visit HP and update anything that you have not. Visit Intel and run the chipset updater. There's a newer version than HP has on their site. Open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow and be patient and let it run and try to repair the system. Finally, some have shutdown the computer, disconnected the power adapter, removed the battery and pressed the power button for 4 seconds or so. Put it back together, plug it in, and boot it and see if you have power controls now.

Sabrina, It's a laptop so not connected to a UPS Nano. It is a x16t-1200. i checked and I have latest BIOS. also no updates at hp.com that appear remotely related. but i went ahead and updated quick buttons from 6.40x to 6.50.x since you mentioned that one. no help Remember, my problem is not solely the power icon in system tray. WHen I run powercfg i aslo don;t see any option letting choose what happens when i close the lid. like my title says, its as if windows thinks its running on a desktop not a laptop. How does windows know if its laptop or desktop and then therefore decide whether it should display these options? I'll try the sfc command too and check intel for the chipset updater and if either helps i'll repost.. Thanks, Mark

Ok, thanks for the info and response. Can you access Start=>Control Panel=>Power Options=>select Change Plan Settings for the current power plan, then select Change Advanced Power Settings. (those are in blue) There you can configure all of the settings. Does it look like a desktop there? The OS will determine the settings for power etc. from the acpi that the bios presents. Did you image the drive using a desktop image for the OS? Run this and post the report. Let's see what's happening. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976034

Yes, doesn;t look right in advance power settings either. No option for lid close. The drive was never imaged, but the laptop was upgraded from Factory OEM Vista to a MAPS copy of Windows 7 Ultimate with a CD. The errors section of the energy-report.html is attached.

Hi, Did you try to change the battery to check? Turn On System Icons for Displaying or Showing via Registry. Before you modify the registry, please make a backup for your registry first, you can refer to the following link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry 1. Run Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe). 2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer 3.Delete and remove the following registry values in the right pane: HideClock HideSCAPower HideSCAVolume NoAutoTrayNotify HideSCANetwork NoTrayItemsDisplay 4. Then, navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer 5. Again, delete any of the following registry values if found: HideClock HideSCAPower HideSCAVolume NoAutoTrayNotify HideSCANetwork NoTrayItemsDisplay Regards, Sabrina TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com. That device(reported as a problem in the energy report) is the Digital persona fingerprint device reader. Try installing the software from HP, disable it in the BIOS or disconnect it physically(real pain). http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-72127-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=3884580&sw_lang= That's for 64-bit. Get the 32-bit if that is what you are using. Also, in device management, you may want to configure the properties of the device to prevent Windows from controlling the power. Power management tab, uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device... The role reported by the energy report is mobile. So, Windows does not think it's a desktop.

i got the energy report to run without the the errors on device 2935 by disabling it in device manager. But that didn;t seem to change the problem of me not having the power icon nor the problem of me being able to set what happens when i close the lid. I also tried several different versions of the Validity Sensor Software and the Digistal Persona Sooftware, some broke the fingerprint reader, but none solved the power icon or lid problem either... Ensure that the Power service is Started and of start type Automatic? As the description of the service suggests on the services.msc, it says: "Manages power policy and power policy notification delivery". Please revert back here if this does not resolve your issue. As far as I know. HP total care program doesn;t list that I need anything. And i tried a few things from HP support site that seemed relevant but they either didn't help or were already up to date. Any particular driver that could be related?
