My impressions so far (1 week with RC1)
To sum up my posts and add a little bit, I would say: 1) Download - buggy, had to use Firefox, 2) Installation - no problems, about half an hour, Windows found the most important drivers by itself or via WinUpdate, 3) Driver issues - DriverMax got me some supplemental updates (like a newer network driver), only thing remaining are the BDA drivers for TV/Radio-broadcast: neither MediaCenter nor most of other TV applications (except MediaPortal) seem able to identify them within the Win7 environment (BDAsup.sys etc.); changing drivers manually (and partly successful) got me the only BSOD so far (when restarting Windows), 4) Compatibility - widespread (if nothing goes, there's nearly always a certain compatibility mode that works), that applies to office applications and games, 5) DX issues - especially concerning games, the possibility to stretch outdated resolutions like 320x200 or 640x480 to a modern fullscreen size (in my case, 1280x800) seems lost (there are exceptions, anyway), 320x200 shows up like a cute tiny window for mice, 6) Performance - very good, seen that at today's standards I use a relatively humble system for testing (my main reason not to upgrade fromXP to Vista was exactly his hunger for resources, beginning with the needed 2 Gigs of RAM, my Win7 system uses less than XP, around 450 Megs), in some scenarios the performance seems to be depending from the free HD space (hibernation, f.ex., works slow with fewer free space and very fast - I'm referring to the hibernate/wake up times - with more), 7) Usability - overall, very good, with minor flaws in some areas (MediaCenter's scrolling-mania, or the unlucky position of the "show desktop" field - when I'm scrolling down a text, I do regularly land on this button and enjoy some fascinating landscape instead of reading my papers); what concerns some design changes - I'm not a thoroughly religious man and won't weight the pro's and con's of such disputed affairs like "classical vs. vista-style start menu", we got used to the DOS command prompt, the 3.1 program manager, Win95- and XP-style menu, and we'll surely find a way to accomodate any new "eye candy" invention to our needs and preferences, as always; and as a last word, no side - neither the critics nor the OS developpers - should exaggerate their references to the "basic user's" capabilities or the vastly adored "user friendliness", there is no easy way to learn something, you have to learn it and get used to it like when you're learning a foreign language. And that's not the same as "love it or leave it". End of line.8) Security - I forgot this, so I'm editing the post. Seems too early for me to judge it since it's not a retail build, i.e. there will be fewer challenges than when it comes out. Since we need administrator rights for rightfully testing it (which in reality isn't desirable) I can't really evaluate the usefulness of the UAC, too. Only one thing seems clear: If I can get around permissions like now, one click and done, every halfways intelligent hacker can do this with some dirty tricks the very same way.9) Stability - I forgot this, too, but that's a good sign. No issues so far.Overall: Until these days I prefered to say "never change a winning team" (XP) but I think Win7 has the potential to change my mind. Mob. AMD64 3000+, 1 G RAM, Mob.
