My credentials for access of a network share get corrupted
I had set up my Windows Vista laptop to communicate with shares on a network server by mapping drives but after a short use I get a message that I don't have the neccessary rights. I have had extensive advice from the device manufacturer but in the end they have refered it to Microsoft's operation system. Now for more details of the background: First I could not get the LaCie Network Assistant to see the drive although Windows could (I had mapped both the open share and the protected share to spare drive letters). I was told the problem was due to the version of Samba required - the drive uses version 3.0.9 which uses NTLM but Vista uses NTLMv2 so I should use secpol to change this but Home Premium does not include this. The discussion in the forums was too difficult to understand how to fix this. Trying secpol on an old XP machine did not help. I was asked to reset the drive to factory defaults. It was also suggested I try connecting the drive direct to the laptop but this caused loss of mapping of the open share and access to the protected share. Error: "<share> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." That's me as there is no-one else here so I must have permission. "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed." How would the system know if one user did use more than one name anyway? I was asked to use the Credentials manager to remove the wrong credential but could not find it so was referred to control userpasswords2, advance tab, but there was no relevant entry in the password list. I was asked to update the firmware - the open share is now working but the protected share still couldn't be accessed - In Network clicking the share (I have windows set to use single-click instead of double-click) gave the message given above but trying to map it it said "The network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password. To connect using a different user name and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share." but this didn't help as there was no such mapping. I checked all shares. After checking the printer share the whole of the drive became inaccessable in both Computer and Network. I left it for several days then the drive became available with the open and protected shares but newly created user shares ran into the same problem. Do I have to wait a week every time I make a change? Or is there a way of preventing loss of credentials?
