My computer is extremely sluggish and will not allow me to run a check disk due to low amount of free space. Have deleted programs to bare bones.
No problem with any applications (i.e. Windows Explorer) Updated to Windows Xp Pack 2. Tried Check disk to repair any damaged sectors and files. Telling me that there is too low disk space to do this.1 person needs an answerI do too

What size hard drive do you have and how much free space is there? Find out by right-clicking on the drive icon shown in My Computer and looking at its Properties.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Consider using a program such as WinDirStat to determine what files/folders are consuming the most disk space. Once you have this info, you can decide what to do.

My hard drive is 6.03 gigs and the RAM is only 528 MB. The only avialable disk space is down to 16 mb. Something is eating away at my H.D. space. Any suggestions?

This can't be right. Your hard drive is only 6GB! How old is this machine? I haven't seen a 6GB hard drive since Windows 95. And you say you're running Windows XP? Please give a description of your computer, including its approximate age. Also include the name of the antivirus you have installed.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Malkelah, It's a Dell Latitude and I am guessing that it is somewhere around 1999-2001. It must have had an installed Windows 95 with upgrade to Windows XP Professional. I have recently downloaded to Windows Xp Pack 2. Here's the long and short of it. It belonged to my brother. He lent/gave it to me. It was on line at one time and he only had an antiquated version of Norton Utilities. It may have only been a trial version. I have only been on line since Wednesday. I went to the Comcast new subscribers web page to download Norton, as it is free for new customers. The download warning said that my operating system needed to be upgraded to Windows XP Pack 2. Did the upgrade download form the Microsoft Security Center launcher. It seems that ever since I got online the computer started to run slower. Define irony...wanted to download a security package and this is what happened. I guess that's what I get for surfing the net without protection. Right now this computer is NOT PROTECTED. Again, very ironic.

Are you indicating that the system seems slower since installing SP2? If so, on a system of that age, I would imagine that you would notice a performance impact. (SP2 was oriented towards security, and a lot of additional code was added to this end.) Note, too, that any modern security software, especially a "heavier" package like Norton, will exact a performance toll. My gut feeling says that a 9-11 year old system has likely served its purpose, and you will be more frustrated with it than anything. (I just replaced a 10 year old system running XP3, and that was my experience. Any site with Flash would cause the CPU to climb to 100%, which had a nasty chain reaction of exposing a bug in the Belkin network drivers, which would cause the system to lose network connectivity, which... anyway...) I understand, too, that computers don't grow on trees, so there is likely a reason you're still dealing with a system of that age.

I completely agree with No.Compromise. I'm sorry but it's time to replace that ancient machine. If you really need to stick with it, you should wipe it and start over. Me, I wouldn't bother.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
