My brother passed away and I now have his computer and want to clean it up before using it.  It is password protected and no one has a clue as to what that would have been.  Is there anyway to get into it without having a password?  Help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My brother passed away and I now have his computer and want to clean it up before using it. It is password protected and no one has a clue as to what that would have been. Is there anyway to get into it without having a password? Help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If it is a "name brand" computer such as Dell or HP, it should have a factory restore system that will activate upon pressing a particular F-key on booting. This will restore the computer to the state it was in when it left the factory ... no user data and no user-added software. If you have a genuine Microsoft Windows XP CD that came with the computer or is otherwise legally available for use on this computer, put it in the CD drive and reboot. If the computer does not boot from the CD and begin the install, you'll have to access the BIOS to change the boot order. See generally, XP Clean Install or XP Pro Clean Install with graphics . In either case, you will need hardware drivers. If you don't have a driver CD, you can get them from the computer manufacturer's website or, with a bit more effort, from the web sites of individual hardware manufacturers. In either case, any password protection -- unless it is a BIOS password implemented by hardware -- will be bypassed. If you don't want to reinstall Windows (not recommended), start the computer in Safe Mode by tapping F8 during boot up. Once in Safe Mode, enter the Administrator account. Unless your brother changed it, the default password for the built-in Administrator account is blank (no password). Once you are in the Administrator account, go to Control Panel > Users and reset the password(s) for the other accounts. Then reboot normally and do your "clean up."
