My Windows Time Service )Windows XP) files have gone missing; cannot update McAfee__
Am using Windows XP S2 (Actually SP3 is also installed). The last update or program installed was a security update for Internet Explorer 8 (except after the problems began I did download "McAfee Virtual Technician"). For a couple of days I have been unable to update McAfee VirusScan. When I started the computer it told me I wasn't fully protected and that "The detection signature file is between 8 and 29 days old." When I try to update, I am told that an error occurred and that I have to reinstall McAfee. I looked up the error messages online on McAfee's site and it told me to perform a time synchronization. When I tried that, it said "An error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. An unexpected network error occurred." So I next got advice that said to get to the command prompt and type netstop w32time w32tm /unregister w32tm /register Using the command line utility (Net Stop ) to Stop / Restart Services produces the following error message: “System Error 1060 has occurred The specified service does not exist as an installed service.” When I type w32tm /register or /unregister, I get the following error message: "Windows cannot find 'w32tm.*'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then click Search." I did a search for w32tm.*, but I cannot find ANY file by that name, and the only file I find is w32time.dll in servicepackfiles\i386 There is no w32tm.exe, w32tm.dll or w32time.exe anywhere. When I check Services, there is no listing for "Windows Time Service" or any service having to do with time. A few days ago I had no trouble updating McAfee so if the problem is related to the time synchronization, the file must have been there earlier. Unfortunately, I cannot go back to an earlier restore point. I am also concerned that these files have disappeared because of malware. I scan for viruses frequently & nothing has turned up since Jan. 28th, but since I can't update McAfee, that doesn't mean there isn't malware present. Do you know of any that might have cause this problem? Short of reinstalling Windows XP again, what can I do? Can I just copy or download the file or a patch from somewhere? If I uninstall McAfee, will I be able to install it again without Windows Time Service, or if there is malware present? Will I continue to have the same problem with downloading McAfee updates? Your help is greatly appreciated. I have tried searching the net for solutions, but I can only find the w32tm.exe files for Windows 2000 or NT, not for XP.3 people need an answerI do too
