Hi my trouble began 2 days ago after a storm and my internet died, from using XP i just decided to disable my local connection and reenable it after I unplug my router and moden. I did this now my vista PC cant get internet but my 2nd computer with windows XP can. I cannot get my main computer with Vista to get internet, it is stuck not sending or receiving. I have tried reseting my router, unplugging my modem, turning off my pc, connecting my ethernet that works on my XP computer to my vista computer, connecting the Vista computer directly to the cable modem, and switching motherboard ethernet ports. None of it works. Vista "diagnose" is pretty useless, it takes you through some options and ends up saying, we could not fix the problem. Vista is connected to a "local area connection 2" on a "connection 3" there is a diagram showing my computer (A Computer) > connecting to a"connection 3" > and a "X" to where the internet globe is. There is nothing wrong with my ethernet cable, my modem or router. all the lights are blinking as they should be and green. I am getting internet now on my second computer with XP on it. It appears something is obviously blocking my internet on my main Vista computer.

Hi, Thank you for your post. If everything worked before, a quick solution is to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur with System Restore. (Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current status.) Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please completely remove the NIC driver and utilities from both Device Manager and Control Panel Programs and Features. Reboot the computer and reinstall or upgrade the driver to see if it works. 2. Please check if you can access the routers management site or ping the router (or other computers on the LAN). 3. Manually assign IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and the DNS settings referring to your routers or the on the Windows XP computers settings. 4. Connect the computer to the Internet cable directly (bypass the router) and check the results. If the issue persists, Please run ipconfig/all on the Windows Vista computer and the Windows XP computerwhich works well and post the reports to this thread. we will perform some further research. well i dont know much about computers so i dont know what most of that means nicholas, i guess i will call my cable operator and see if they can send a technician -sigh- which usually takes a week. i can conclude that i dont really like vista after having it for 4 months. it really has a lot of "fluff"= useless options that make you think vista can think and fix problems for you, which usually fails.

ipconfig dosent do anything on my xp or vista machine, i run it and a black box appears with no text on it for like half a second and closes.

You need to go to a command prompt. From the run command type cmd and hit enter. This should open a command prompt for you. At that point type "ipconfig" and you should see your network settings. Compare them on the vista and xp boxes....they should be similar except for the last three number of the ip address.
