Avast Professional has its own firewall component which will correctly disable the built-in Windows Firewall. Your computer is behaving exactly as it should. That said, it is badly out of date with only Service Pack 2. Do maintenance and then install Service Pack 3.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenancehttp://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareWindows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (Microsoft Download Center)http://tinyurl.com/6k9zo3Prerequisites for a successful installation - MVP Harry Waldron - http://tinyurl.com/6nf4k4 Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
