I am on windows 7. My IE is upgraded to 9. I have installed this in the past to be disappointed by it not doing what it is meant to. I recently uninstalled this IE 9 and reverted to IE 8. I then today upgraded to IE 9. Restarts in between all, and registry cleaned each time. IE9 is recognized by the microsoft sites. Every other site says I am not using 9. Youtube says I'm using IE 7. Internet Explorer itself under About, claims to be version 8.0.7601.17514 and lists itself as IE8. I tried the microsoft fix it service, but it brought me to a tech who tried to use heat-related crashes to claim that there was a malicious program changing registry entries. A bogus claim to try and extort a 299.99 yearly service plan. All of the listed crashes he highlighted were unrelated and over two years old, and none of them had anything to do with IE. IE has never had a crash or issue. It just won't update.

What did you mean by "clean registry"? Remember that third party "cleaning tools" can let your system in not very predictable status. I recommend to do in-place upgrade which removes IE9 cleanly and after restart and subsequet update will bring IE9 "without pain". Using Tune-Up utilities to remove broken registry entries after removing a program, like IE 9 in order to reinstall it properly. ....only for it to fail anyway.

That is what I've tried from the same instruction page, before posting here. Not just once but three times, with restarts after uninstalling, restarts between, and restarts after installing. Each time my IE thinks it is newly installed, whether when uninstalling IE 9 to roll back, or when installing IE 9. Before finding that page I could not even find internet explorer as a program to uninstall. When rolled back to 8, youtube recognizes my IE as IE 8 and reminds me that youtube is discontinuing support for it. Same for EA's Battlelog website. When IE 9 is installed from the microsoft website for IE 9 with that annoying pizzazz as if microsoft is trying to sell me it instead of just giving me a download, youtube says I have IE 7 and reminds me that they are discontinuing support for it. Battlelog just warns me that IE 7 is not compatible and that I should update. The registry cleaner only removes invalid entries such as those linking to non-existent programs and file paths, and I only run it after removing things such as unwanted tool bars that sneak into my browsers. Something I haven't had to do since January. After all Windows uninstaller is notorious for leaving behind files and registry entries after using its unisntaller to remove older PC games (79 in fact after removing some old windows 98/xp games). Or when simply uninstalling something isn't enough, like with IE 9 after the first two attempts last week. On the third attempt to uninstall and re-install it seemed somewhat promising: I had a different IE browser icon with more of a sky blue instead of a dark blue. Unfortunately even that yielded no real results. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. I've had this issue about upgrading to IE 9 before ever having a registry cleaning program; purchased tune-up utilities in February 2012. Had the IE upgrade issue since November 2011. Computer was bought in August, 2011. It's not old at all. Google chrome and mozilla firefox have no trouble updating. IE, however, likes to download windows updates for itself but still identifies itself as IE 8, before and after uninstalling. Now... I just tried the first link with: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2579295 since it was not one that I have tried. (The second one I did 3 times as mentioned.) And without restarting I opened up IE to get to the favorite bar and back to this page. And for the sake of it I checked the about to see what version it might think it is now. "IE 9." O_O Evidently I had to use the IE9 cmd.exe style removal... in order to have it correctly installed? No wonder Bill Gates' first dos program was called the Quick & Dirty Operating System. Thank you. If I don't message again shortly after this, then it still thinks it is IE 9.

i wouldn't count Youtube as a valid sorce to tell me which version of IE i am running. Because your Windows 7 came with IE 8 most of the dll are still there after upgrade to IE 9. Youtube is reading Internet explorer version from a wrong place. You can try to re-register IE like suggested in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813444 When you go to "tools - help - about internet explorer" that's the only accurate source of information that i would trust as far as the version goes.

Same situation here. Youtube and Aweber (I think last time I used Google Adwords also) said I was using Explorer 7 and would soon not be supported. But my Explorer says I am running version 9. My computer is only 7 months old. When I went to download Explorer 9, it told me I already had the latest version.

I am having the exact same issue with about 6 different web sites not allowing me access because they think i am running IE 7. I have tried uninstalling and restalling multiple times to no avail as well as following the step by step instructions on the Microsoft Help page. I really don't want to switch browsers but Microsoft is giving me no choice unless someone can help me with this issue...
