My Games worked on BETA build 7000 but not on RC build 7100
Hello, I have been trying to get my games to work with the new RC build. Specifically World of Warcraft, Spore and Mass Effect. All worked and ran beautifully on the Win 7 beta build 7000. Since I have installed the RC x86 and x64 I can't get anything to work. Tried updating my video drivers for my nVidia 8800GTX, chipset drivers, reinstalling the OS... nothings working. The games will start to run for a few mins and work fine then randomly crash. My system does not over heat and my hardware works fine. I am dual booting with Win XP Pro SP3 and they all run fine there. I noticed the RC forces DX 11, can this be the issues? Can this be rolled back to DX10? I tried updating DX but nothing, cannot get any game to work, seems anything that uses a 3D engine fails after a few mins. Other then games everything works great. Thanks for your responses.

Lateral - Do you have any of the error messages being given off by these games as they're crashing? Check the Event Viewer and let us know if what they are and maybe we can narrow down the cause of the problem.

ive installed win7 yesterday and WoW is running fine. try this: -delete your WoW shortcut on the desktop -get into your World of Warcraft directory -start your louncher.exe (do not click play) exit the louncher after it appears -start the WoW.exe (exit the game when you are in the login screen) -create a new shortcut of the WoW.exe / lounche.exe on your desktop

hmm i think the Blizz Forum is the better place for your problem. im german and in the german blizz tech forum are some blizz stickys how to fix that error. but no Blizz Support for win7. but i think that other WoW players can help you

Hello Lateral,Have you tried running the games in Compatibility Mode? I looked into it further and Spore particularly doesn't have a Compatibility option in its properties window so for that particular game go into Control Panel>System and Security>Troubleshoot Computer Problems>Run programs made for previous versions of windows, then follow the wizard till it gives you a list of installed programs, if the game isn't listed manually add the .exe file by browsing. The wizard should come up with a few options to get the games running properly. Hope this helps.

Well because every game i try and install ends up crashing I do not think that wow maybe an Isolated issue. Reading the WoW forums, all I get is people telling me that my hardware is defective and to re-install the game. I've ran memtest and have tried every Blizz fix, error 132 is a generic error for WoW it could mean anything. The thing that I don't understand is why everything worked on Win 7 beta 7000 x86 and x64. It also works on XP x86 and x64. And also on Ubuntu!!! As soon as I have installed Win 7 RC build 7100 all my games stopped working. I tried reinstalling and testing on the x86 and x64 bit versions both the same results. btw, here is my system info: AM2 6000+ 3.02 ASUS M2N-SLI DELUX 4gigs Kingston RAM nVidia 8800GTX 74gig Raptor 10K RPM bootdrive

Hi SaMcp1123, I have been running the programs in compatibility mode, I was just right clicking and setting it to run Administrator and setting the compatibility to WinXP SP2. For kicks I have just tried going the long way and taking the path you pointed out, it just told me to pick the app I am having issues with, because I don't have Spore installed right now ( I just reinstalled the OS ) I chose Mass Effect, it put its compatibility to WinXP SP2 and asked me to start the game. Boom! It crashed with the same error as my second post. :( Now Event Viewer aside, here is the actual error that pops up after Mass Effect dies, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- general protection fault! history; gmatrix2d;; swap()address = 0x10ed695d(filename not found) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like WoW according to people on the Bioware forums, this is just a generic error that does not really mean anything. I can't believe there is anything wrong with the games themselves.

Hi Lateral, The error codes were much more helpfull. The first one (0x85100084) is an error with the .exe file. But the other error code(0xC0000005) all come up online as memory access violation which is generally a faulty memory stick. I suggest removing one memory stick then trying the game out and repeat until the problem stops. I've run into this problem several times myself but if it is a memory moduleonce the offending stick is gone it should work fine.

Well I've ran Memtest and have tried testing individual sticks, they work. So I am trying to understand is how come when I boot in Win 7 beta build 7000 the games work flawlessly, I just tried it 5 mins ago. I know googling these error codes are coming up with faulty mem and whatnot but it clearly is not the issue. Everything works on every other OS that I have tried, this is isolated ONLY with Win 7 RC build 7100 both x86 and 64. I appreciate your help but I would like to get beyond the basic I found this on google remedy because I have been through it all. This is something depper within this OS or a driver somewhere. This has been an issue since they released the RC, and I have been pulling my hair out of my head to get any game that I have working. Seems that ANYTHING using 3D crashes. Everything else works. Any game, anything 3D. I think it could be DX 11, is there a way to go back to DX 10?? My hardware is not coming up faulty nor is it overheating. Not 1 game has been playable for more then 5 mins on this RC. Beta they work perfect. What changed from 7000 to 7100?

I had a problem similar to yours after installing RC1, but it turned out to be the latest drivers from nVidia that was causing my game to crash.Try uninstalling the latestnVidia drivers, and let Windows7 install the WDDM driver that is supplied with the OS.

Hello Lateral,If anything using 3-D crashes have you tried disabling Aero or even switching back to a classic theme?

Lateral, Did you perform a clean install of Windows 7RC and did you use a burned ISO image downloaded directly from Microsoft? There could be many compatibility issues if either of the aforementioned were not performed. There are great Windows 7 forums as well as various tips / tricks, videos and other great resources available driectly from Microsoft Springboard -- check it out! http://tinyurl.com/832nco JessicaMicrosoft TechNet / Springboard

Hello Lateral, If anything using 3-D crashes have you tried disabling Aero or even switching back to a classic theme? Hello, Thanks for your suggestion, so I tried it and my games started to work when Aero theme was disabled. I don't get it. Why would this happen now and not on the beta? Or in Vista? My system is more than capable of handling Aero. I am going to try and set all my 3d apps to disable Aero when running them and see if that works. Thanks.

Didn't test it long enough. I've tried nVidia's beta drivers and Microsoft's drivers. They still crash the game. I've also tested my RAM with memtest86. @JEssicaD42 - Yes, I installed from an ISO downloaded directly from Microsoft. I have tested multiple copies, 2 different x86 and 2 x64 versions. Every copy of RC build 7100 crash my games, but my copy of Beta build 7000 still runs all my games perfect.

Hi Lateral Have you tryd the latest 185.85 driver for nvidia cards? Ive installed it with a modded .inf on my Notebook and ist works fine. This is a WHQL-Certified driver supporting GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, and 200-series desktop GPUs and ION. This driver package installs WDDM v1.1 for GeForce 8, 9, and 200-series (DirectX 10) GPUs and WDDM v1.0 for GeForce 6 and 7-series (DirectX 9) GPUs. This driver supports all of the new Windows 7 GPU-accelerated DirectX APIs: DirectX Compute, Direct2D, DirectWrite, and DXVA-HD. maybe it helps also update directx. download the dxwebsetup.exe from MS and start an update

Hello Lateral,Thats a bummer disabling Aero didn't work, I thought we were on to something there. This is a really strange issue, I can run Spore flawlessly with Windows 7 RC x64.I dont have Mass Effect to try that one, butI didactually have theintermitent crashes withSpore in Windows Vista x64 Ultimate such as your describing with the same time length between crashes. I assumed Windows 7 cleared that up. Im currently running it on all default Microsoft drivers including WDDM 1.1. Perhaps some other application or 3rd party software is could be causing this?

I am going through everything now, the only thing that is running consistently running in the background is Avast anti virus, but has never given me issues before. I am going to keep sifting through my system and see if there is not something I am missing.

Hello Lateral,I personally have no experience with Avast but hereyou can download beta versions of Windows 7 RC approved anti-virus programs. Perhaps trying one of those will clear this problem up and isolate it.

Hello Lateral,Have you been able to resolve your issue? Please let us know.
June 8th, 2009 6:16pm

Okay, thanks everyone for all the help. This issue seems to have been caused by a defective hard drive. Seems as though my hard drive had some bad sectors and when the applications would try and fetch the data on these sectors my system would crash. I just swapped out my drive and everything seems to be working now. Thanks again!
