My Computer Icon Won't Launch Explorer
I'm seeing a weird problem all of a sudden. When I double click the My Computer icon on my desktop nothing happens. I can manually launch explorer.exe from the run box and can use the Windows Key+E combination to launch explorer, but double-clicking the icon directly on my desktop results in nothing. I can right-click the My Computer icon and choose manage or properties and both of those come up as expected. I created a test shortcut that points to %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} and that works as expected. That same view is what I normally expect to see when I double-click the My Computer icon. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate edition x64 with SP1 and all the latest Windows updates as of today. The computer is a Dell Alienware Aurora R3. I recently formatted the C drive and reinstalled Windows using the Alienware respawn media that resets the computer back to factory default settings. I then installed MS Office, some of my apps, Symantec Antivirus, and a few other things related to video editing. Nothing outlandishly-crazy has been done to the computer. I have a 256GB SSD installed for the C drive and the factory-installed 2TB HDD is the D drive. That configuration has worked fine for several months and I'm not inclined to believe that is the cause of the problem. When I install any new application I force it to go to the D drive rather than the C drive to conserve space on the SSD. Beyond that I'm not really doing anything too crazy with this computer. The problem started today but I'm not sure exactly when. It happened sometime after the latest round of Windows updates and various application installs. The My Computer icon worked fine for some unknown period of time from when I reformatted and reinstalled yesterday to today when the problem was noticed. As for troubleshooting, I have ran SFC /SCANNOW and it said it found and fixed some corrupt files. The log is really big and convoluted so I'm not really sure what was fixed. If I try to run the shortcut called "computer" under Start --> programs --> accessories --> system tools I get the same result: nothing happens. I feel like this is a case of a broken CLSID or something similar given that I can run explorer.exe manually and that there's only something going on with that shortcut and desktop icon which both are supposed to open the same thing. Dell support is basically useless since this is not a hardware problem. I can certainly reformat and reinstall and I'm sure the problem would be fixed, but I really don't want to do that again since I just did it yesterday and just now got everything I use reinstalled. Any ideas?

Hi, I suggest you can perform a system restore to check the result. Meanwhile, you could also try the following: 1. Test the issue in Clean Boot 2. Create a new user account 1. Click the Start Button, type User Accounts in the start search pane and press Enter. 2. Click Manage use accounts. 3. Click Create a new account, and type the name. 4. Choose account type as Computer administrator. More reference: Fix a corrupted user profile Hope this helps Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

I ended up fixing it by applying hotfix 244677: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2444677
