Multiple Errors after KB973874 Update -X64
After latest update, system would not start up. Kept getting multiple error messages about WerFault.exe, dwm.exe, etc. all failing at the same memory address and instruction (0x77293892 / 0x00000000). Read on Vista forums this morning that KB973879 was causing BSoD's on 64-bit systems (which I saw 5 of at work yesterday). Thinking the two were related I checked my updates and found KB973874.Uninstalled, rebooted, problem solved! Bad update! Sid,An other possiblity is that an 3rd party application is interfering with the patch. So, if it possible to install the patch agian. And perform a clean boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796take the vista section). And see if the issue still exists.Kind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

DFT: Good idea. When I get a free day (mmmmmmmm, never?) I will give this a shot. In the mean time, keeping this update from installing keeps my system usable until I have the free hours to troubleshoot the conflict. Of course, I had the same exact problem when trying to install the new nVidia graphics driver, so this isn't an isolated problem for me. Could be my Win7 install is just not stable any longer. Regardless, I am not going to fret too much until the final release code is on my system with a fresh install. That's when I will actually get upset if things don't work. Thanks for the help! I saw a total of 14 of the KB973879 issues the first day it came out and its increasing. I saw the KB973874 issue first happen today at work and had it happen to me when i got home. Something microsoft is doing is messing with things. This issue is going to be reoccuring at this rate. @Daft: What third party software do you think could possibly be causing this? I am just wondering cause i wanted to research that possibility more for my work. EDIT: @Sid: was yours for windows 7 or vista x64? and what mfg is your computer?

Red,I can't give you a specific 3rd party software. You need to do the "cleanboot" test to indentify witch 3rd party software is causing this problem.Kind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

daft: Thanks much for the follow-up. I heard from a couple of other local Win7 users about having the same problem and the uninstall worked for them as well. And I lost count of the Vista x64 repairs I've done since that update struck! Still had systems coming in with BSoD from KB973879 yesterday. Appreciate the help very much! My niece bought a laptop at best buy Friday(64 bit Vista),, the auto updates installed 7 updates Sun night she called me and ask if she should let them update I said yes monday morning when she tried to start her laptop she got a "windows fails to start" error It would not run the Launch system repair option or the start windows normally option ,We tried to start it in all the safe modes, no joy and it would not boot from the recovery disk it became a paper weight at that point, fortunatly Best Buy let her return it for another, happy ending?? uh no not so much. Tuesday morning I pull out my trusty Dell 1330(32 bit Vista) which has been problem free start it up and BOOM same error "windows failed to start normally" with all the same symptoms , the auto update installed 5 updates the day before BOOM CRASH coincedence I dont think so. After 3 hours with dell support the dell rep tells me I need a new Hard drive and that they have been battleing with these updates taking out their pc's, I have an extended warranty so it wont cost me anything but what about all those who dont,, who have to fork out hard earned cash to repair their pc because of these catastrophic updates?? Is Microsoft gonna reimburse all those who paid for their errors??If Windows 7 is all it is said to be then Microsoft should be giving it out free for all us vista users whose pc crashed because of their updates

jj a: Sorry to hear about those problems. I'm a Geek Squad agent and have seen several of those same problems (Windoze fails to start normally) which get stuck in a Startup Repair loop. Had to re-install the OS on all of them (they were Vista systems.) We have not been able to determine a cause so far. So you think it might have been the auto-updates on your 32-bit Vista that crashed it? I haven't seen many threads about updates causing such a wide variety of crashes, but from what you describe it does sound suspicious. If I hear anything from the other Precincts or notice a pattern in ours I'll post it here. Oh, and don't think Windows 7 is going to cure all of our ills: my 64-bit RC1 copy of Windows 7 crashed with a BSoD from the last series of updates too!
