Multicast Addresses
Hi My Switch permanently lists the following MC's: 01:00:5E:00:01:18 01:00:5E:00:01:28 01:00:5E:7F:FF:FA 01:00:5E:7F:FF:FE I could not find a list that would resolve this for me. Does somebody know what these MC's are for? Thanks McL

Those are Media Access Control (MAC) addresses of the hardware chips (ports) in the switch. You cannot resolve anything about them. They are hard wired permanent addresses. Every network device has at least one MAC address. This switch has four. See info @ http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/M/MAC_address.html Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. No offense ... but please respond to threads only if you know what you are reading/writing about. - These are NOT simple MAC's of the switch interfaces. These are Multicast MAC addresses. You know this by the first part of the MAC which is 01:00:5E for MC MAC's. You can read more about it here - in case you are willing to add to your knowledge about networking technologies: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_tech_note09186a00800b0871.shtml#multi - I DO know what a MAC is - The current MC list of a managed switch has nothing to do with the count of its ports -> i.e. this is an 8-port Switch .. This is the "it-pro-networking" forum, right? I assumed that this is for professionals ..

.. This is the "it-pro-networking" forum, right? I assumed that this is for professionals .. If this is true, then how did MAC multicasting get into a Windows 7 Networking forum? What does Microsoft have to do with multicasting? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Frankly, nothing directly. However, my experience with MS forums - usually specially the Small Business forums - is that there are a lot of Pro's around trying to help out for various topics, sometimes with only small relations to a specific MS product. Never mind, I'll look somewhere else. Multicasting will make it into basic knowledge in the very near future because it is widely used with todays IPTV and other streaming technologies.
