It may take a bit of time, but there is. Another option to clean up space is to run Disk Cleanup. Go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Cleanup. It can restore considerable space. Just uncheck "Compress Old Files," as although it does save space, it can slow down your computer. If you want to keep the external HDD plugged in all the time (or most of the time), you can move the location of your My Documents data to the drive (Right-click My Documents and select Properties). It may be helpful to remove some programs, or install them onto the external drive. Deleting unnecessary icons on your desktop will speed up your computer. You can also buy more RAM, and delete browsing data from your computer's browser(s). Deleting lots of files (or at least most of them) helped me. But if your computer is slow, it could also be something else: 1. You have malware slowing you down. 2. You have too many antivirus applications (you only need one). 3. You don't have enough RAM (for XP, I recommend 768 MB, but you could get away with 512 MB). 4. You have too many desktop icons and too many programs installed.
