Mouse stops responding when pc resumes from sleep (suspend to ram). Why?
Sometimes, when Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit RTM resumes from sleep, the mouse stops responding. It doesn't happen every time, it seems to be random. The mouse is Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, with all the latest drivers. It's the only problem I have with the system coming back from sleep. The mouse is connected to an usb port, my pc doesn't have a ps2 port for the mouse. The mouse buttons work after sleep, but the pointer doesn't move. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it does come back to life. But I would like it to avoid this.

Ok, thanks. I hope it's fixed soon. Is it a problem with my mouse in particular, or does it happen with any mouse?

I also have a problem with Microsoft Intellimouse USB. After coming out of sleep, the mouse pointer does move, but only an inch or 2 at a time on the screen, and with many movement of the mouse. It can take 15 or 20 seconds to get from one side of the screen to the other. I am not in a hub - directly to a USB port on the back of the PC. Unplugging the mouse and putting it back in fixes it. I have tried different USB ports. The "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked, andit is grayed out. I have no issues with the USB keyboard.RonRon

Same problem as RonWHarding. I am actually on W7 Home Premium 64but had the same issue with Vista 64 and XP. Other way to make it move properly is to send the PC to sleep again and wake it up with the keyboard. Problem seems to be replicable when u wake the pc by moving the mouse.

I have a similar problem. My mouse sometimes stops for a while a few seconds after I power up after sleep, and sometimes it stops working completely (its lights go out). Re-plugging it does not work, only rebooting the PC. I have a Logitech G5 mouse and Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I had the same proble and found a fix and it's easy. Go to the device manager and then open the tab Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then find the section with USB Root Hub. There will be many of them. I had 8. Right click on the first one and left click on properties. Then click on power. Under description you will be looking for your mouse. If it is not there try the next usb root hub untill you find the one that lists your mouse. Once you find it, click on the power management tab and uncheck the box that says allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. That fixed it for me. I'm no computer expert, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Oh, but if move your mouse to another usb slot, you would have to switch the power feature for the new slot.

Aloha, I am having the same issue. I am using a Dell xps420 desktop with windows 7. This computer was upgraded from Vista. I can not hibernate because it gets the "bsod" blue screen of death, so I don't hibernate. Howe ever, if I am away for to long, the computer goes to sleep, and I lose keyboard and mouse which is using a usb port, which is a known issue. I am just posting to complain, and to be notified if a solution is found. Just for the record, This computer is 3 years old and this computer always loses sound at random which was a known issue with vista and with Windows 7, and to this day it still loses sound with vista and with windows 7, which is incredible that a solution has not been found. Thanks, Manny

Just to keep the issue alive, I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) installed. It worked for three days with no issues. Then, last night after coming out of sleep-mode, the mouse would not work. It is a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse 2.0 using the latest driver from Microsoft's site. To resolve the issue, I try a wired Intellimouse that I had as well as a wireless Logitech mouse. I tried all three going through a USB-hub, and, then, directly into the USB port on the laptop. Nothing resolved the problem until I rebooted the laptop. However, I decided to turnoff the sleep- and hibernate-modes. While investigating the issue through the Internet, I discovered that there were power setting for the USB devices as noted by joeddmd. Just to be safe, I too turned off the USB power-saving mode as well. Hopefully, the problem won't re-occur. bcg

By now Microsoft has months of this "no mouse after sleep" problem. For me "Windows 7" has not crashed - except for this problem and "no keyboard after sleep" problem. This is very irritating! Yes, I have checked "power management" for my ps/2 mouse and I do not allow the power down setting. Please fix the problem. How many billions of dollars do you spend on R&D? I can not believe an understanding of this problem and a fix are too difficult. Is there some fundamental flaw? Am I going to have to buy "Windows 8" just to fix this one bug? Frustrated!Always Microsoft Problems

Am I going to have to buy "Windows 8" just to fix this one bug? Always Microsoft Problems > Frustrated! <and> This is very irritating! Yes and yes! A thousand times yes.. It is now January 2011. Win7 64, i7 quad. I have 2 $100 mice in a drawer I used for a few hours (gaming mice) but my hand just doesn't fit them. OTOH ...er OTSH (on the same hand? lol) my good 'ol Intellimouse fits perfectly. The only way I will give it up is to smash it on camera while I use foul language aimed at Microsoft.. For God sake (or any diety of your choice) - Microsoft - it's your own friggin mouse!!!!! It carries your logo!!! Jeeeeesh... Now, since I can still get to a few places using my tab key, If someone can show me how to make a shortcut to reload the mouse driver I think i could execute it (if it works on a reload). Thanks for letting me vent.

Can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet, especially being a Microsoft product. I tried the "Generic USB Hub" fix that joeddm mentioned, but the check box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" was already unchecked. There has got to be an easy fix for this. I was surprised to find so many others with this same problem, especially with the popularity of this particular mouse for many years. I had this same mouse when I bought a computer in 2002, and after having to finally replace it, along with my new PC, I am very disappointed that it does not work with Windows 7. =( This has been my all-time favorite mouse. I really don't want to consider buying a different one just because of this issue.

I also have this problem. I have a simple microsoft optical wheel mouse plugged into a usb port in my laptop. After waking from sleep, the mouse turns on (i.e. the optical light is on) and the buttons work, but the mouse cursor won't move (I can move the mouse cursor from the laptop's trackpad, though.) To solve the problem, I unplug the mouse and plug it back in again. And this is not a big deal, I guess. But here's what really bothers me... This only happens when I'm working at home. When I use my laptop at the office, it doesn't happen! I can put the laptop to sleep at the office and wake it up, and the mouse works fine! I've tried things like turning off the wireless network and unplugging the power cord to avoid any variables that could differ between the two locations. I also have bluetooth off so that's not a variable. The only thing I can think of is radio interference! And it makes me feel crazy, like I should be wearing a tinfoil hat. Maybe I should put a tinfoil hat on my mouse to see if that fixes it. Anyway, I know nobody is working on this problem, and this thread is very old, but I just wanted to share my own crazy experience as a form of catharsis.

I just got a powered 3.0 downgradable 2.0 USB hub, and not that my Microsoft Trackball is plugged in, I to am experiencing this LONG on-going problem. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! It appears even if I have the power management boxes unchecked in device manager for all the hubs, there is still freezing going on that requires me to unplug the usb cable and replug which then seems to load another driver that then needs the power management box unchecked which then only helps for a limited time - repeat - repeat - repeat. How do we get this escalated within MS for something they add to their bug fix and do fix list?

Thanks, joeddmd -- I suddenly started having this problem a few days ago and your solution worked for me. In my case the mouse was listed under "Generic USB Hub" rather than "USB Root Hub". What puzzles me is how this setting got changed to begin with.

I have had this issue crop up randomly for me for 2 years and every month I would search for a solution and find this thread. with only the device manager fix that didn't help me. PROBLEM: My problem started with a new Intellipoint Mouse and then continued for my Razor Lachesis mouse. The mouse buttons would still work but the motion detection would not after sleep and sometimes after a full restart. SOLUTION: I went into the power management under Control Panel (Classic View) -> Power Options There I selected high performance and then change performance settings [Oddly enough this caused a error with Explorer and after opening again it worked] Then I modified the USB Settings to Disabled [I also changed around when things slept for my own sake] Even while writing this reply i went to sleep mode and back using my mouse with no issue. After looking up online there is a great guide found here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.html Hope this helps someone, Wolf

Ooh, same problem here, updated to current. Win 7 64. Microsoft mouse. This is still not fixed. I think this happened when I bumped the mouse. I just sat at the desktop and the PC woke up. I checked all of my USR Root Hub and Generic USB Hub's and they're all have no check by "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
