Mouse drag and drop to network share is a move operation, not copy
I've created several network shares by right-clicking on Computer in an Explorer window, invoking Map Network Drive, and then choosing the command at the bottom "Connect to a web site...". This creates a shortcut under Computer, allowing one to open folders on the remote computer as expected. However, if one mouse drags and drops a file onto the remote computer window, the file is "moved", i.e. it's copied to the remote computer and deleted on the local computer, just as though one were using a folder on the same local drive. This is contrary to expectation - in the past a default drag and drop has always been a move operation if performed from one folder to another on the same drive, and a copy operation if to a different drive or different computer. I believe this is a bug, or at least an oversight, in Windows 7.Richard Southworth

Hi Richard, I have also tested this on my test machine. I tried to drag some files and folders to the mapped drive and they are just copied. Please also try the following to have a check: 1. Drag some files and folders from one location to another on your local drive and check how it works, copy or cut. 2. Boot the system to Safe Mode with networking and check the issue. 3. Check if you have installed some explorer plug-ins or some third-party file and folder management tool. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Nicholas, I actually ran into this exact issue this weekend, but I was trying to burn copies to CD using explorer. I verified that the steps that I was taking were the same as outlined on the Microsoft site and every time I attempted to burn the disc the files were deleted from the mapped network drive. Below are the steps that I took that both resulted in the files being deleted as well as what I had to do to finally burn the disc. Steps that resulted in files being deleted: 1. Insert blank CD into drive. 2. From prompt select burn using explorer (Mastered Format) 3. Enter title and select with CD/DVD, click Next. 4. Open a second explorer window, navigate to mapped network drive with files to be burned and snap next to explorer to be burned. 5. Drag and drop the files from the share drive to CD. This where the train would fall off the tracks every time. I would receive a message that the file(s) no longer exist and if I wanted to continue. From here the files would be deleted from the share drive. The best part is that the files would also NOT be locally stored to be burned. Steps to burn share files WITHOUT delete: Follow steps outlined above, but instead of just dragging and dropping the files as outlined in step 5 select the files from the network share location, right mouse select copy. Then right mouse select paste in the explorer window to be burned. I have tested this many times and every time ended up with the same problem. At this point I am sure that there is a problem with the way that Windows 7 is performing the burn. The system that I was using to burn is Windows 7 Home Professional with all the patches and updates loaded. The remote system is Windows XP Professional with all the patches and updates loaded. Thanks in advance Jim

I have this problem also in both Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional, drag and drop to a network share is moved rather than copied. This happens with two different installations of Windows 7 on two different laptops and is really annoying to lose files rather than share them with the remote computer.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on Windows 7 Enterprise machines in our office. We've had to restore some lost production files because of this issue.

We are experiencing this same issue as well. I have not seen any solutions posted for this. Has anyone resolved it??
