Monitor Resolution / Icon Location and RDP
Perhaps I'm blessed to be one of the lucky ones to have two 22" monitors (1680 x 1050)on my desk at work. I'm running Windows 7 RC 7100on that box and as I work in IT there are many times whereI use Remote Desktop to connect back in to my computer. Everything is great if the machine I use to connect back in to my desktop also shares the same screen resolution. However, if I use my laptop (1440 x 900) to connect into my desktop then the location of allthe icons on my desktop get moved about in order to display them at the lower resolution...and that does not bother me...What bothers me though is that when I get back to my desktop and login locally, even though I'm once again at 1680 x 1050 all the icons on the glassare squashed together as if I was on the reduced resolution. So...I have to go through the task of putting the icons all back where I like them...until I remote back in again which then moves them all about once again... Rinse and repeat...With the work that went in to the Taskbar and finally allowing people to "order" it as they like...it seems like this falls into that same category. It would be nice if RDP worked on more of a"virtual" desktop resolution. That way no matter what resolution screen I use to connect back to my desktop computer when I return there and sit down in front of it the icon locations have beenpreserved.Just my stray thoughts...Mike N.

Mike - I can tell you that this issue of yours has been around probably as long as terminal services (NT 4)... I sometimes RDP into my laptop running XP when I need to move a file or need to run a task and it's sitting where it's inconvenient to get at when I'm at my desk. My laptop's a 15.4" wide screen with a non-standard resolution. My main monitor is a standard 4:3 18" unit - and whenever I connect to the laptop, it also moves stuff around. I don't know how they could "virtualize" an RDPsession without changing things around drastically. About the only sane idea I can think of - keep the clutter on the desktop itself to a minimum. Yeh.. I know.. Not always convenient..

I hear what you are saying, and yes I know this issue has been around for a while---I've lived with it on XP for years. However, I feel that MS has learned that people like knowing where things are. I've heard that allowing people to move things around on the Taskbar was the #1 feature request. I'll admit, I'd be one of those making that request. I used to open apps in the right order so that the icons would be where I wanted them. Win7 makes that a moot point now. I love that feature of the taskbar.I'm just wishing that they would addressthe same "issue" regarding the desktop. I want the icons where I want them. I don't have a ton of icons on the glass, less than two dozen, but they are ones that I use frequently enough to have them warrnat a spot there (and not on the taskbar or start menu or elsewhere).I'll admit it's a picky request and not one that is going to prevent me from doing my job or using the OS, but it is something I'd like to see eventually make it in.BTW, the ability to use both my monitors when connecting to another Win7 box over RDP is also pretty slick...Mike N.
