Modem/dial-up connection issue
I have been battling to set up a dial-up connection using my phone and also using a Huawei USB modem on Business edition 32bit. I have the correct drivers. Both pieces of hardware are compatible and work. I have tested it on a Vista Business machine and can see they definitely work. With both modems, the whole process seems to get to the point where Windows says, modems connecting, then it stops and says connection failed. After investigation I get an error that says 'the server did not respond in a timely fashion'I think somehow there is a setting on my machine which is preventing the dial-up connection from making that final connect.Any ideas?

Hi Jack, You can use following steps to run a modem diagnostics: 1. Exit all programs, and then close all open windows. 2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 3. Click Hardware and Sound. 4. Click Phone and Modem Options. 5. On the Modems tab, select the modem on which you want to run the diagnostics. 6. Click Properties. 7. Click the Modem tab. 8. If the default speed is not already set, set the Maximum Port speed to 57600. 9. Click the Diagnostic tab. 10. Click Query Modem. 11. If the modem responds and it is functioning, the system displays the modem information. If the message "No Hardware ID Found" is displayed, or if you receive an error message, contact the OEM/manufacturer of your computer for help with troubleshooting the modem errors. Also, please try reinstalling the modem drive and ensure USB device is working fine. Hope this helps.

I did that and it said the modem is fine. After consulting various IT specialists as well as my Service Providers Technical Support team, I decided to just format the notebook. After spending a whole day reinstalling all my apps, I left the modem for last, and set a system restore point. It installed first time with no hassles. This was definitely some kind of strange bug in Vista.

Microsoft as always did not solve it. And just to complete the information when you get this bug no dial-up connections will work. So in the case of companies, just forget VPN connections also...
