Missing ntuser.dat file after copying profile
Hi, I'm trying to setup a mandatory profile for a Windows 7 (Professional) machine that connects to a Windows 2003 server. I've been following this knowledge base article in order to configure things correctly but recently ran into a problem at step 2L. After copying the default profile, I don't see the ntuser.dat file. Instead, I see two other files: ntuser.dat.log1 and ntuser.dat.log2. Log2 predates the purchase date of the computer and is 0KB in size while log1 is dated from today and is 256KB. Any ideas on why this might be and what I can do to fix it? I tried continuing with the steps in the above knowledge base article to see if I could get the profile to function as a regular network roaming account. Instead, I got the following error message at logon: "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied." I haven't modified the default group policy for this network account. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, If you don’t find ntuser.dat file, I suggest you could create a new user profile to fix the default profile. Here is the link: Fix a corrupted user profile Hope it helps. Thanks for the suggestion but the solution to the first part of my problem was a little simpler. Coming from Windows XP, changing the folder options to enable the viewing of hidden files was sufficient to reveal the ntuser.dat. In Windows 7, you need to go one step extra and uncheck the box that hides protected operating system files in order to see the ntuser.dat file. Previously, I hadn't done this so this is what was causing the problem. Suffice it to say, I've now located the file and changed the extension from .dat to .man, making my roaming profile a mandatory one. The second problem I mentioned remains though. When I try to logon with the account that's been configured to use the mandatory profile, I get the following error: "The Group Policy Client service failed the logon. Access is denied." This link from a few years ago is the same problem I'm having now. I tried both solutions that were suggested but to no avail. Again, I'm trying to connect a Windows 7 computer to a Windows 2003 server.

Just to follow up on this, I've found the solution to my second problem and posted it here .
