Missing icons on Desktop
I have had two boxes in our production environment that encountered an issue with missing desktop icons The first was a black desktop and missing icons. The second, and most recent, just has some of the icons missing from the desktop. With
the first I ended up just changing the desktop background back and then copying the proper shortcut icons back on to the desktop. But now that the same sort of issue has happened on a second box, it is more concerning.
Both boxes are running Windows 7 Professional and were actually built using the same image. These boxes are accessed on our customer's network via Remote Desktop. We take a hands off approach when dealing with our production boxes. The
customer has no access to log into the box.
I will just detail what is going on with the second box, since I've already "fixed" the problem on the first.
The box should have the Windows Classic theme set. Instead it has the Windows 7 theme set.
When you browse toC:\Users\[username]\Desktop all the shortcut icons are present.
When my colleague used RDP to get into the box he noticed that the folders in C:\Users\[username] were actually duplicated. When I logged into the box with the same username, the duplicate folders were gone. But I did notice that some of the
folders were dated 12/14/10, while some were dated 4/14/11 at 9:03pm. So, I checked event viewer for that date and time and found some interesting events in the application log. These events are obviously related, but I don't what to make of them.
Below are the events that may or may not be relevant.

Hi,
I suspect that it is because the logon process will initial the users’ Desktop every time. But not the Document.
Please check whether the Desktop target is where you setup? You may refer to the following steps:
1. Open your Computer, then Right-click then Desktop icon in the right Window.
2. Hit Shortcut tab.
3. Under Target you will find out the directory.
Also, You can try two things to fix it:
Right click desktop>view>show desktop items.
If that does not work.
Right click desktop>personalization>change desktop icons>restore default>ok.
Then
Right click desktop>view>show desktop items. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
