Missing XP SP3 svchost.exe due to bad McAfee DAT 5958
McAfee Virusscan 8.7i running on XP Pro SP3 using DAT 5958 will remove the %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe due to a virus false positive. Is this the most current file that should be used to replace the missing version:File: svchost.exeVersion 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)14,336 bytesCRC-32: 6ef02438MD4: b28e3f6da87e0e7095678225cc6f75caMD5: 27c6d03bcdb8cfeb96b716f3d8be3e18SHA-1: 49083ae3725a0488e0a8fbbe1335c745f70c4667I don't want to use an obselete or incompatible version of svchost.exe to fix the computer and make this problem worse. Microsoft has also retired the DLL Help database at http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/, and svchost.exe may not have been listed there either.PS see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841290 for a tool to generate checksums 3 people need an answerI do too

The following instructions should fix the problem: Boot into Safe Mode Rename mcshield.exe to mcshield-old.exe (c:\program files\mcafee\) Open a command prompt Go to c:\i386 Type “expand svchost.ex_ c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe” and hit enter Reboot Log into Windows normally Open VirusScan Console -> Tools > Rollback DATs Rename mcshield-old.exe to mcshield.exe Reboot I hope this information is helpful. McAfee has instructions posted here: http://vil.nai.com/vil/5958_false.htm

I appreciate the answers telling me how to fix the McAfee issue, however I was confining my question to versions of the svchost.exe since this is a Microsoft forum and that file is provided by Microsoft. McAfee indicated in their article "McAfee DAT 5958 False Positive Error - FAQ" at https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB68787&pmv=print the answer I was looking for: Exactly which versions of Windows operating system and the svchost.exe file were affected? A subset of systems running Windows XP Service Pack 3 and having specific versions of the svchost.exe file were affected. Svchost.exe files found on Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP Service Pack 1, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and older versions of Windows were not affected. Details of svchost.exe files affected are: File Size OS File Version Md5 14,336 XPPRO_SP3_x86_v1 5.1.2600.5512 E4 10 EC 73 E2 BE 2A 41 D9 23 B0 06 F5 1C 84 27 14,336 XPPRO_SP3_x86_v2 5.1.2600.5512 27 C6 D0 3B CD B8 CF EB 96 B7 16 F3 D8 BE 3E 18 14,336 XPPRO_SP3_x86_v3 5.1.2600.5512 A7 81 24 26 8A 77 F4 19 02 DB 18 F6 22 AF E6 13 "Mltwwlco" wrote in message news:caf3bfbd-6073-4147-bfd3-4916c163801e...
