Are you using and administrator account? Where is the UAC slider set? FWIW I don't see the same problem.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hi Kerry,Thanks for your response and apologies for my late response.I am using an administrator account and UAC is set to one notch above the bottom level.EDIT: Just put UAC down to the bottom level and have the same issue. I'm not sure what would cause this. You may want to wait and see if you get an answer to your feedback.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Enable the local administrator account from an elevated command prompt by typing net user administrator /active:yes. Do a switch user and login as the now enabled local admin and see of your issue with the Windows Feature dialog box remains. If so, then you have other issues that need to be addressed.

Browni, Now that is a good question. Unfortunately, I dont have a good answer as to how to repair your Windows Features dialog box. If you have not gone too far, you could do an in-place installation over top of your present Windows 7 to see if that will repair it; however, I have to admit that I am kind of doubtful that it would work. A clean install will fix your issue, but that is too drastic of a measure and is really not a solution to a working system.

This is a problem I've never seen before. Searching for it doesn't bring up any likely solutions. I'd start over again with a clean install. Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hi, Before moving on, I suggest deleting the pending.xml from c:\windows\winsxs if the file exist and restarted the system to test the problem. If the issue still persists, please refer to the following Microsoft KB to troubleshoot the problem. KB931712 : The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive an error message that includes the following code when you try to use Windows Update: "0x80073712" Hope it helps.

Robinson, the file you mentioned does not exist and one of the options in the KB was to use system restore which didn't work either as I only had 2 restore points. For some reason, system restore was set to use only 4% of available disk space. (again reported via the send feedback link)Looks like a clean install is required but I think I will hold on a couple of weeks as the RC seems to be just round the corner. Thanks again all for your efforts.BrowniMFC Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical

Browni,Did you try this? I assume you did, but I am just checking for completeness. Method 1: Run the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool with the sfc /scannow commandAlthough this method sounds highly technical, it is really a straightforward process that even the less experienced user can do. System File Checker merely makes sure that all system files are where they should be. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. This method is rated: Moderately easyEstimated time: 5-10 minutesTo run the System File Checker, complete these steps: Click Start Collapse this image Expand this image , and then type cmd in the Start Search box. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue. At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If information from the installation CD is needed to repair the problem, you may be prompted to insert your Windows Vista CD.After you run System File Checker, try to run Windows Update. Or, try to turn Windows features off and on to see if the problem is resolved. If this method has worked for you, congratulations, you are finished with this article.

Hi Darrien & thanks for your feedback.Yes I did try this and method 2 was using system restore which unfortunately didn't go back far enough. To be honest, I don't know when the problem occurred as this is the first time that I have tried to activate additional Windows features.RegardsBrowniMFC Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical

Hi Darrien again,I decided to do an inplace upgrade of Windows 7 (build7000) and it has restored the missing features. It took just less than an hour (can't complain on my PC spec) and it has also kept ALL my previously installed applications intact.Well done MS for that.I now have Telnet access to my router which I have not required for a while, I just wanted to check some settings on it to assist somebody on another forum when I came across the problem.** EDIT We appear to be cross posting !It's a pity I didn't get to try your latest possible solution.Once again, thanks to you and the others for your efforts.BrowniMFC**EDIT 2FYIThe registry keys that exist after the reinstall areLastScavengeCookieLastScavengeFlagsStoreArchitecureStoreFormatVersion Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical
