Missing Rundll32.exe - No Internet Access/Explorer 8 installation failure.
Need help. Would like to access to internet first and then address other problems. Running Windows XP, Media Center Addition 2005.1) Problems stated with rundll32.exe / application not found error message. Could not open many programs. Reviewed suggested fixes on this web site. At this time I was still able to access the internet with Explorer 7 (or 6?). Could not find rundll.exe in any folders on computer. Copied file from another XP computer but did not help. It looks like the file loses the (.exe) when pasted in to the system32 folder?????2) Ran Windows online scan http://onecare.live.com/en-Us/center/cleanup.htm, which found (7) file issues with JAVA files. (5) indicated as "Exploit Java" files (I have file details and paths) and the other (2) files indicated as a Trojan:Java/Mesdeh and aTrojanDownloader:Java/OpenConnection.ev.3) Went to Microsoft Windows website to download MRT. MRT download process included "windows update" check. Update check identified that Explorer 8 should be downloaded. I agreed. Download may have completed as it asked to restart. After restart,I tried to open Explorer and the screen that asks what program to use came up. I picked Internet Explorer and it then identified the rundll32.exe/application not found error message. It looked like it was trying to run a "reg.exe"???? Not sure on that. However now I click to start Explorer and the hour glass runs for 4 seconds and disappears with nothing happening.4) I would like to get Explorer working again. Do not care what version, just so I can access a cleaner (malwarebytes, etc.) and maybe a download of the XP software or rundll32.exe file from the computer OEM, as I did not get disks with the computer. Thanks MJZ1

Thanks Debleena,Great Job, Well Done - I was able to uninstall Explorer 8 and regained internet access through Explorer 7.Still Working On It - Rundll32.exe error message.a) I used Method 1 and tried to run the "Fix It" tool but it says it does not work for XP.b) I tried Method 2 and was able to get the SFC to run. Really felt good. However, my first problem was that the SFC kept asking that I load the Service Pack 3 Upgrade disk or the Windows XP program disk in the disk drive(also it asked for XP Professional / I had XP Media Center Edition loaded on my computer when build, but when I send it in to HP for a repair they send it back with XP Professional). I do not have disks for either one as Windows XP (and I believe the SP3) came downloaded on my HP computer without disks. I am going to contact HP unless you know another way to address downloading these programs. However, not sure how much HP will help as they have directed me to Microsoft in the past when the problem is a software issue.Fear - My real fear is that having the Windows XP disk will not help me as it seems my computer will not accept downloads from internet, disk drive or as I mention open programs. I have tried to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other programs with no success. It seems that any time the program / application involves a .EXE it moves me to a dead end (what program do you want to use to open). Is Method 2 with the XP disks still the best next step??? Thanks Again (Note: Edited item b. above)

Hi MJZ1,Good to know that the Internet Explorer issue is fixed.Let’s follow these steps and check if it helps.Step 1a) You may navigate to the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup.b) On the right hand side of the pane, check if the source path is C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles. If it is not, you may change the source path to C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles.c) Double click on the source path and in the edit string, type ‘C: \Windows\ServicePackFiles’.d) Click OK and close registry. Restart the computer.Step 2Thereafter, run SFC scan again and check if the issue persists.Hope the information helps.
