Hi Leo,

I've got the same problem but when searching within all apps "Desktop" does not get listed...only Remote Desktop Connection and Skype for Desktop.

Any other ideas?

I suggest to perform a system refresh to fix this issue.

Follow the steps below to restore your PC:
Enter the Start screen
Click Control Panel
Click General on the left column
Under the Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started

Then follow the instructions that will be displayed on the screen.

The file was actually deleted - getting the same file from another machine resolved my problem (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Desktop.lnk).

Running SFC does not replace this file (my guess is because it is not really a "system" file). Is there no way to recreate this desktop tile file in a similar fashion to the way one is able to re-create the "Show desktop" icon for the quick launch as per KB article 190355? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/190355

Your kidding...

A missing lnk file and you are suggesting to do a refresh.

This happen to me on my Server 2012 r2 system and I am not about to refresh the OS files for a shortcut.

Just copy the lnk file from any compatible OS (Win8.1 or Server 2012 r2) to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder and its fixed.

I thought the same thing when reading this....you've got to be kidding.  Performing a refresh will cause the user to reinstall many apps and email settings, plus last time I did this I even had to reinstall Office 365.  Sounds like a canned response.
