Mirror drive monitoring
Since every post I have read on TechNet about Windows RAID seems to have a lot of confusion, let me preface my question by saying I am NOT using a hardware RAID controller, I am NOT using a FAKERAID controller, I have mirrored two dynamic disks in Windows
Disk Management to create a Windows-managed RAID 1. This is NOT the system disk, it is for data drives only.
Secondly, I have a degree in Computer Science specializing in Hardware Architecture, I am well aware of the benefits and disadvantages of RAID, I don't need an explanation of how they work, I have MANY Linux-based RAID arrays running fine and this is NOT
my only backup solution.
Hopefully with those two points out of the way I can avoid what all the other threads on RAID are filled with.
My question: If one or more drives fail in a mirror created via Disk Management, is there any type of notification? This isn't a server that won't be logged in to for months, this is a desktop used daily. A systray notification would be excellent and sufficient
for my purposes, I don't need an e-mail. I realize I can use MonitorAgent to send e-mails or regularly check Disk Management, but I am hoping that Windows, since it's the one writing the data to the drives and should know when one fails, is already set up
to give a popup when a RAID becomes degraded. Can anyone confirm that?
