Minimum Operating Disk Space Require?
Hi, I have the following scenario require help to answer.Win XP (SP3)128MB40GB HDD (Free 300MB)From my understanding the Virtual Memory Swap is 2x of the Memory which is (128MB x 2 = 256MB) so the following apply;300MB - 256MB = 44MBSo the actual available free space is 44MB.Please correct me is the above incorrect? 1 person needs an answerI do too

When Windows reports free space on an HD, I believe it reports what is left after the used swap space is accounted for. So the (Free 300MB) that you are referring to probably means that you actually have 300MB free on your HD. If you like, you can manually adjust the amount of disk space used for the Virtual Memory Paging file, but that usually isn't recommended. If you really want to, you can goto Start->Control Panel->Classic View->System->Advanced Tab->Performance Settings->Advanced Tab and manually adjust the size of your Virtual Memory Paging File, but that probably isn't a good idea right now.Instead of tweaking your Virtual Memory, I suggest you consider a) Removing infrequently used programs via Start->Control Panel->Classic View->Add or Remove Programs orb) Getting an anti-static wrist-strap and following the procedures for your PC to upgrade your memory to 512 MB. orc) Getting an external USB or Fireware HD to augment your 40GB internal HD. ord) if you have the money, you might even buy a new computer for about $400 and then you can get Windows 7 :-)

If you really have 300mb free, as seen from properties of C, you have insufficient free space for the operation of win, you need a minimum of 6gb free (15% of HD size) for efficient operation of winThe free space shown in properties takes into account any swap file

Yes, it's incorrect. You have 300MB free. The swap file is not part ofthe free space. You have *way* too little free space to run any version of Windows. There are various things you can do to get some more free space, butthey are all at best stopgap measures. A 40GB drive is tiny thesedays, and even if you free up some space, you will soon find yourselfalmost out of space again. The only real solution to your problem isto buy a larger drive. And by the way, 128MB is too little RAM for almost anyone to haveacceptable performance. You should have at least 256-512MB. Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Ken Blake
