Migrating a partially bitlocker encrypted drive to another computer
I have a 4.09TB RAID5 Array which i'm currently encrypting using Bitlocker. It's currently about 12.4% completed and it took me 50hrs++ to get there. Now i'm planning to migrate my RAID5 array onto a new computer.... So my questions are... 1) Will the new computer recognize the partially encrypted volume? 2) Will bitlocker automatically continue encrypting the drive? Thanks...

Hi, Yes, if the drive is a data drive, you can unlock it from the BitLocker Drive Encryption Control Panel item just as you would any other data drive by using a password. If the data drive was configured for automatic unlock only, you will have to unlock it by using the recovery key. If it is an operating system drive mounted on another computer running Windows 7, the encrypted hard disk can be unlocked by a data recovery agent if one was configured or it can be unlocked by using the recovery key. Member, if the RAID configuration helds Operationg System, please create a data recovery agent. Bart Bart Kurowski IT Suport Analyst MCP, MCST, MCITP, MCAS

Hi Bart, Thanks for the reply... and yes... it's a data drive only. I have a separate RAID0 array which holds my OS. I've already successfully migrated my RAID0 array but i'm contemplating on doing clean install to avoid any future headaches. Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe, It is good to hear it. Data volume is always easier to transfer to another PC. no problem, Bart Bart Kurowski IT Suport Analyst MCP, MCST, MCITP, MCAS
