Migrate NetBios NBNS Networks to Active Directory ADS-DNS
I need to know how to map a NetBIOS DOMAIN name or WORKGROUP name to an Active Directory DNS Name. I assume that workstations in ADS-DNS will be formatted as "host.domain" but what is the format of the "domain" part? My guess is that the NetBIOS workgroup or domain "MYDOMAIN" gets mapped as a top-level domain "MYDOMAIN." which assumes that a registered domain has not been acquired. This also conflicts with management of the DNS root domain "." under which (com, org, net, info, bz, us, ...) are registered. Synchronizing the DNS server root domain from the Internet may cause loss of the "MYDOMAIN." name service unless special considerations are addressed. It may also be required to deploy a partitioned DNS service to resolve these special issues. The NetBIOS names are 15 characters in length, with the 16th octet being a resource type association. I don't need a description of how NBNS works or how DNS works. I don't need to know how to configure DNS for I am familiar with numerous DNS products. I need specifically an answer as to how a Microsoft NetBIOS DOMAIN Name, and NetBIOS Host Records are to appear in DNS as resource records. Sincerely, SteveGood systems are supportable

When you create an new Active Directory domain (new forest), you are prompted during the DCPROMO process for its NetBIOS name AND its DNS domain name. For most implementations, if the domain name is CORP.net, the NETBIOS name will be CORP. However, that is NOT a requirement. The NetBIOS name for CORP.net could be DOMAIN1. Your question --> "I need specifically an answer as to how a Microsoft NetBIOS DOMAIN Name, and NetBIOS Host Records are to appear in DNS as resource records." NetBIOS records do NOT appear/register in DNS. DNS will only contain HOST names. If you want to register/resolve NetBIOS names, you'll need to integrate WINS into your infrastructure. Thanks for the response. It answers my NT-DOMAIN mapping to ADS Domains. Additional Windows 2000 DNS information is available from the library: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb742582.aspx Sincerely, SteveGood systems are supportable
