Metro Apps Crashing Outside Domain

Good Morning -

I have a number of users with Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2's running Windows 8.1 Pro. These devices are joined to our domain but in an OU that is exempt from policy. When they are connected to a company wireless network, they seem to behave just fine. However when my users take them out of the office and connect to their home networks, many of the Metro apps crash on startup. For example, the Camera and Photos apps both crash after attempting to start. The PC Settings app locks up after a minute or two.  I've replicated the behavior with a wireless hotspot. Things get weird when I connect to the hotspot then immediately go back to normal as soon as I switch back to our company network.  And by immediately, I really mean "immediately". No rebooting or logging off and back on. I can also tell you that this problem seems to be relegated to 8.1 Pro. The tablets I have running 8.0 Pro are not having the same issues.

Any assistance you can provide is very much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hi,

Did these tablets join to domain?

I consider that the domain GPO configured the security settings or the proxy prevent the Metro app running on this computer outside the domain.

When you bring the tablets to home, please clear the proxy settings to see whats going on. Meanwhile, please run APP troubleshooter to detect the issue:

App troubleshooter:

If the issue still persists, please help to export the event log below and upload here via Skydrive or similar hard driver, share the link here:

To identify whether the issue is caused by authentication of network, please help to capture the network traffic and post back when trying to open Metro app at home by using Network monitor:

Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4

Thank you for your response!

I haven't run some of the troubleshooters just yet but I'll get to them this afternoon. In the meantime, I can tell you the following:

1) Yes, they are on the domain and the problem only occurs with domain users.

2) The problem is isolated to 8.1. Our tablets running 8.0 are fine.

3) We do have a small amount of folder re-direction enabled for the Documents folder.

4) The machines are in an OU that is free of all domain policy.

5) We have no pre-determined proxy settings.

6) I expect a certain amount of slow performance with any domain mobile device when it's away from the network. But EVERYTHING in 8.1 slows to a crawl when we change off our local wireless network.

I'll get back to you with those test results later on. Thank you for responding!

I believe the problem is with folder redirection. Heres how it goes down for us:

  1. The Documents folder redirects to a network location.
  2. The Camera & Photos apps tie directly into the My Photos folder, which is redirected along with the Documents folder.
  3. When those apps cant find the network location, they flip out and crash.

I know all of this because when I sign into a test user with no redirection, everything works fine
, regardless of what network I'm connected to. So the question remains, how do I fix this without turning off folder redirection for my users? Also, just so you are aware, I tried running the App Troubleshooter under several different circumstances with no luck. An exported copy of the Event Logs can be found here:

https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=4D8D72139548613E!250&authkey=!AD05Ds381tY0UeE&ithint=file%2c.xml

It will show you a large number of events related to Cisco AnyConnect. I have disabled that software in hopes that it might fix the problem but it didn't. Thanks so much for your time!
