Metadata dramatically increases file size of .tif files
Hi, I have been scanning microfilms into high res .tif files and when I modify the subject line in the file "details" the files almost triple or quadruple in size. This doesn't happen in Windows XP, but it appears to happen in vista and on my current OS: Windows 7 Enterprise. A 1.5 MB .tif file becomes a 3.6 MB .tif file because I attach a subject line to the details. How can I fix this, if possible? It seems like a bug to me. Thanks, Dave

Hi Obviously, this is a compatibility issue. Since your scanning tool that generates the files is not compatible with windows vista and windows 7, the size of the files would dramatically increase when they are modified even if you just change the subject details on windows vista and windows 7 workarounds . You could run other scanning tool that is compatible with windows 7 instead of the old one.

Thanks for responding Ivan-Liu. I'm not sure that it is as obvious as you say. The .tif (Group IV) file format is a standard format the scanning software uses to encode the image file. I haven't found anything that indicates the file format is incompatible with Windows 7. I suppose the tool incorrectly encodes the data to file and could therefore create an incompatibility. I will discuss the matter with the vendor, but I would be surprised if that is the cause because they probably use the standard compression algorithms.

Hi, You could try other photo program to open the *.tif files as default? Or copy the original file to another computer. Please try it. Wish you success and wait for your result.

Hi, Just like that you said, sometimes we open and close one file with no change. But the size of it increases a lot. So could you try another photo program to open the *.tif files as default? Or copy the resource file to another computer. Please try it. Wish you success and wait for your result.
