Memory usage when share accessed
In a batch file: I have a 2003 server doing a backup with ntbackup. (ah the good ol days) it maps a drive to my PC (windows 7 64bit) \\PC\H$\share it starts the backup and starts making progress. On my windows 7 PC, I see that 96% of my memory is in use. thats 3.85 GB of 4 GB in use, and I can't find a process using it. The memory usage will go back to normal, about 1.5 GB, after the backup completes.

Hi there, First of all, have you clicked on the "Show processes from all users" button in the tast manager? I believe the "96%" ram usage is being used by SYSTEM and not the user. Also, I've read somewhere that Win 7 is made to use up to 90% of the RAM on your system so that frequently used programs and files load faster instead of leaving it redundant.

the system process was using no more than 2MB This is specific to when the server starts writing to the share using ntbackup. Once the backup is over or canceled it goes back to normal. during this time there is not indication of what service or process is using the RAM.

Hi, Please also try the following to have a check: 1. Boot Windows 7 to clean boot environment: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 2. Please run Process Explorer to check which processes are using a lot of memory: 1) Download and run Process Explorer. 2) In Process Explorer, go to View - Select Columns, switch to Process Memory tab, and then check the items Working Set Size and WS Private Bytes and click OK. 3) Click on Working Set column to make the processes sorted by physical memory usage. 4) Then, you will see the top memory users. Please also let us know the processes names. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
