Memory issue: Windows XP Pro does not use full physical memory, and stability issues result.
Hello, Recently (Over the last 3-4 months), I have been having stability issues on my workstation at my work. The workstation refuses to commit more than about 1080MBytes of RAM. The workstation came with 2GB of RAM from the Dell (Dell Optiplex 745). I have asked for a memory upgrade of 1 GB to have a total of 3GB to see if this could have been the problem, but of course this did nothing to help. Windows properly detects all 3GB of physical memory, and it shows that over 1.8GB is currently available. When over the 1GB is allocated, programs stop rendering or re-painting themselves correctly, some applications will crash, some show very odd behaviour such as my media player Sonique, which just today was zipping through songs in about 5-10 seconds, with no audio output. Other strange things I have seen are Out of memory errors, some applications are unable to successfully create new windows. One common symptom of this problem is the titlebars on all of my windows no longer render. When I drag the windows around, the window underneath has it's titlebar painted with the render of the window above it being dragged across. I am currently running Windows XP Professional with SP3. We have a Windows Update Server which our Windows Update connects to in order to receive Windows Updates and hotfixes (Only approved and known non-detrimental hotfixes are pushed out to the clients and workstations). I am using a dual monitor setup. The only hardware changes I have made to the system is the addition of a USB-based M-Audio FastTrack Ultra studio soundcard for listening to music (I really am an enthusiast, when it comes to audio, and this soundcard is awesome). I doubt that the soundcard is the issue, as this was happening before the USB soundcard was installed. This is a development machine, with an instance of SQL Server 2008 SP1 and IIS installed and active. The full Office 2007 suite is installed. Frontpage 2003 is installed. Visual Studio.NET 2003 is installed. I also have several web browsers installed for testing (Mozilla Firefox [latest], Internet Explorer 7, Apple Safari, Google Chrome, and Opera 9). Our mail client is Novell GroupWise 7. I also have PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.50 installed (client tools only), and Crystal Reports 2008 SP1. I commit updates to web servers using FileZilla for S-FTP. While this doesn't affect me unless I am really busy and have alot of applications running simultaneously, it gets really bothersome when Windows refuses to allocate more physical memory to accommodate the demand. I really do believe this to be a Windows issue. Note also that the page file (for virtual memory) is disabled (set to 0MB/no page file). A machine with 3GB of RAM should not require a page file. Has anyone experienced this issue on their own workstations, and does anyone have a proposed solution? Thanks, - Bran1 person needs an answerI do too
