Memory efficiency
My system has 1.536 MB of physical memory. When I check my resources, it shows Available Physical Memory of 97.85 MB.When I look at the Memory Resources, I see a number of duplications, for example: five entries for System Board, three for SIS Processor to AGP Controller, three for NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 with AGP8X. All resources show status OK.What should I do about these duplications and is the physical memory being tied up by them?1 person needs an answerI do too

Where are you seeing this report of resources (how are you checking resources)? Are you having some issues you can describe or are you just looking around at things? Tell us more about your system so we will not have to guess about what you have. What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack?Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc. Please provide additional information about your system:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.Don't guess what the problem might be - figure it out and fix it. I need YOUR votes and points for helpful replies and Propose as Answers. I am saving up for a pony!

Your virtual memory setting is not the problem. You need to review what you have running in the background and whether it is necessary? Many programmers set their applications to run at start up. Often this can be changed to an "on demand" basis.Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the PerformanceTab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. Withthe Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxesbefore Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figuresfor the 6 processes using the largest amounts? Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry,Commit Charge (K): Total 729860, Limit 1278212, and Peak 904056.Physical Memory (K): Total 523824, Available 211028 and System Cache 129492. Don't understand this one, because Total Physical Memory is 1,536.00 MB (see first post).Under Processes, the largest peak memory users are MsMpEng.exe (226,468K, svchost.exe (144,652), explorer.exe (130,864), firefox.exe (92,180), AWC.exe (53,444) and forcefield.exe (45,516). There are 32 total Processes, excluding Task Manager.Any ideas?Thanks,Bob

BobYour system does not seem to be recognising 1,536 mb RAM memory. System Information says 2 gb virtual memory with a pagefile of 1.22 gb. Therefore your system is only recognising 0.78 gb RAM. Note your Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440 will be taking 64 mb RAM memory. The Microsoft System Information utility does not show what is in the motherboard memory slots. You need a third party utility to get these details and the next two links give access to suitable freeware utilitiesLavasoft Everest -see under Motherboard, Chipset.http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlBellarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.htmlTask Manager is showing that at times your system is reliant on the pagefile. Accessing the pagefile is slower than accessing RAM memory. This isapparent as the Peak at 904056 is greater than theRAM being recognised.MsMpEng.exe = WindowsDefender. What other anti-virus and anti-spyware software are you running?AWC.exe = Advanced System Care. What programme are you using? It sounds like a Registry Cleaner which many users advise against.forcefield.exe is a Zone Alarm add-on. What is the programme you are using?I see you are using Firefox. The next link highlights a memory leak problem.https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/753700Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry,I am running Windows Security Essentials (Anti Virus). When I stopped MsMpEng.exe it warned me it was shutting down. I do not have WindowsDefender installed. I am running Zone Alarm, and the forcefield is part of their program, although I am not sure what it does. I looked at the Firefox link, and I am running version 3.6.10. I haven't had any problems with it. The AWC is a registry cleaner that my son recommended. I installed it yesterday and ran it. It made some changes, but had not done anything for the Memory problem. I think Zone Alarm also includes a Spy-ware blocker as well as the Firewall.I ran the Everest Home Edition program, and it gives a lot of information, some of it conflicting. For example, under Motherboard, it shows three DDR DIMM slots. Each has a 512 mb chip, but the Motherboard/Memory shows only 512 mb of physical memory. However, under Computer/Overclock it shows all three slots filled. Under the Benchmark/Memory Latency it shows a P4 Asus P4T533 motherboard (mine is P4S533) and in the CL-RCD-RP-RAS Column there is no entry. I don't know if that means anything or not.If You think of anything else, please let me know. Thanks, Bob
