Media Player not able to see network shares in Windows 7
Hi,
I am currently running Windows 7 and I have a little media player running in my living room. All was good up until Saturday 29th of May after which my Media player is no longer able to read any network share on my Windows 7 machine.
The media player I am using is also working as a NAS, the Windows 7 machine can copy files over to the Media player without any issues. Currently the shares on the Windows 7 machine is set to allow the 'everyone' account to have full control (I know this
is not good as far as security is concerned)
I also have a Windows XP machine which has some shares setup as well, the Media play can access the Windows XP shares without issues. Both the Windows 7 machine and the Windows XP machine can see each other shares and there are no permissions issues.
There were no changes to any firewall settings or account changes as far as I know, in fact I also disabled both the Win firwall and the software firewall on the Windows 7 machine but this did not help.

Hi,
Since it worked previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous status when the issue didn’t occur.
If System Restore doesn’t help. Please also try the following:
1.
Check if the Windows 7 computer can ping the Media Player.
2.
In Windows 7, run the following command in an elevated command prompt to disable Windows Firewall and check the issue:
Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off
Note: This is just for test; please turn it back on with the command “Netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on”.
3.
Adjust sharing settings in Windows 7 to see if it helps:
1)
Go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings”.
2)
Under “File sharing connections”, select “Enable File Sharing for Devices that Use 40 or 56-bit encryption”.
3)
Under “Password protected sharing”,
select “Turn off password protected sharing”.
4)
Ensure that the following items are turned ON:
Network Discovery
File and printer sharing
5)
Save above changes.
4.
In Windows 7, set the following Registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel” to “1”.
For more information, please refer to:
LmCompatibilityLevel
Note: If there
is no the “LMCompatibilityLevel” key, please create it as DWord and set the value to 1.
5.
Boot the system to clean boot environment to check the issue:

boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If the issue persists, please also let us know the brand and model of this Media Player or NAS.
Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi Nick,
Thanks for you help.
Before I posted this topic I did attempt to System restore, but this failed. Gave a error and broke my Anti Virus. So I rolled back to restore attempt.
The good news however is that now the media player is working again and ready the share on my computer. I assume it was the creation of the new DWORD in the Registry that resolved the issue.
I did notice a weird thing when I was following the earlier troubleshooting steps with the advanced network setup. I had configured this when I first installed Win 7 and the settings were basically set as per the instructions above with the exception of
the Network Discovery. When I went into the Advanced settings to check the Network discovery the option is always set to ' Turn off Network Discovery'. Every time I have been in there I set it back to 'Turn on Network Discovery'. Is there any reason
why this doesn't stay set to "on"?

Hi,
I am glad to know this works again after running System Restore.
Regarding the issue that “Network Discovery” will not stay on, I would like to share the following with you for your reference. Please try
the methods and see how it works:
Network Discovery
will not stay on
Why
does Network Discovery refuse to stay "On"? I am not able to communicate with the other systems on my network
Network
discovery (stays off)
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
