McAfee Uninstall Issue
Someone help me please! I bought a Toshiba from Best Buy two years ago and it included a one year subscription for McAfee Anti-virus software. The subscription expired a year ago & I was so tired of the subscription renewal pop-up I un-installed the program - I thought (it just went to the "Wastebasket" thingy (sorry). Anyway. I emptied the wastebasket this a.m. and after that a diagnostic program ran and found five critical errors - no Windows is not responding and I can't use the computer. I went to the Microsoft help site and found this is a common problem with McAfee removal - and it literally forces you to purchase a tool to restore the system. What I found on Microsoft to "fix" the problem is something called "SCCM 2007 Task Sequence - McAfee - with a long list of steps to follow to restore the system. I'm not a techie and this scares me cause it's so complicated. I'm also not able to restore the system any other way. McAfee also acknowledged the problem and posted a download that's used with the task sequencing but it's gone and I wasn't able to find it anywhere. My system basically crashed because of this and Windows is not responding. The funny thing is I ran several system checks and nothing is wrong with the system. Help please!!

Hi Tutt1410, My system basically crashed because of this and Windows is not responding. The funny thing is I ran several system checks and nothing is wrong with the system. Help please!! First go into task manager and see if you can spot any McAfee processes running. There could be several of them. Check both your own files and also click "show processes from all users" for others possibly there. Once you've detemined no McAfee processes are running then re-run the Windows diagnostics you ran to try fixing the OS. btw what diagnostics tools have you tried. Perhaps we can suggest something better. Magon Liu advised me to get the fix-it troubleshooters by going to this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 This should help you too I'd think. All the best with it. pkn2011

Hi Tutt1410, note: Once you've detemined no McAfee processes are running Getting them to Stop might be tricky depending what they are. Try "End Process" directly from Task Manager first. This might stop them outright. And the order you try to stop them if there are more than one can also be important. Don't give up just coz they complain. If you have a problem stopping them come back and tell us what processes they are. Also take note of the names of the files and where they are located from the command line before you stop them, so you can try uninstalling them using 'Programs and Features' from Control Panel. You might also find they are listed in your startup file and if you don't remove the entry there they might come back when you restart your system again after fixing it. So you'll probably need to edit the startup file. I use a 3rd party utility to do this, but windows has tools too. In fact the Fix-it troubleshooters from the link above lets you do that as well. Hope you're making progress. Regards. pkn2011
